This is going up at my camp. That is 4.5 hours one way from home. The last thing I want to do is constantly worry if the builder has shown up or have to check on them. A few of my neighbors have the less expensive locally built barns. I think now they are done they are happy with what they got. They will readily tell you that it was a extended process chasing down the builder, getting the job done etc. Lots of head ache's. When I go inside their barns Vs the Morton their is a HUGE quality difference. The one end is going to be temporary sleeping quarters for a few years until I can get a log cabin built. The things that impress me most are the Wainscoting around the bottom that is lined with OSB, continuous ridge vent, gutters, vented soffits, Heck for that matter 1' overhangs ! When you look at the bracing system they use its a very nice building. I have also heard from several members here and at Country by net that they are good as gold on their warranty. That is a big plus and a good reference. Dave

My impression of the replies you got is right in line with my own experience with Morton: we put up a 24' x 32' x 8'-6" shop building about 3 years ago, and they put in the slab. I placed 2" styrofoam insulation around the slab perimeter before they put in the wire reinforcement, and when they were done, I built 2x4 interior stud walls for insulation, wired, and built a ceiling, drywalled and painted. I also put an epoxy finish on the slab. I'd do it all again in a minute, and the only thing I wish I'd done differently was make it bigger. The direct vent heater I installed, 13,000 btus, is a little small, but it will keep the shop at 65 degress if I give it enough time. I don't want to have any problems with this building as I get older and less capable, and I think Morton is absolutely worth the money over the long run. I too have heard about them replacing roofs when the paint failed after 12 years! The Kynar finish they use is the best known, based on my architectural experience. And, rest assured I have no personal interest in the company other that they are around if I need them. And yes, their salesmen are not pushy or trying to sell you anything. So, ask questions and take the initative, which is counter to most such dealings.

My sales person is not pushy at all. In fact I had to ask about upgrades. It is a nice change not to be dealing with the super sales type. In fact the guy at Morton gave me a few ideas to changes that would save me $ and be better for my application. On the end room closing the wall to the roof and going from a R-30 to a R-38 in the ceiling was $660. When he called he had both prices for me so I could make a informed choice. With the other builders I called all I ever got was "well you know we will have to look at it !" lol, I usually know what that means $$$$$ ! I also have a neighbor that told me he paid "about" $10,500 for a 24x40 with concrete last year. I guess the "about " part was a little subjective considering the concrete is 4k. Dave

nobody wants a pushy salesman, but the least a person could do is make a suggestion that if you are spending the money on an insulated and steel lined 48 x 75 x 16 or so building "You might want to consider our perforated cieling panels to reduce echo" that was a comment from the owner of a building that I visited. He found out about the option after the building was up.

They certainly do not push any options. I guess this must be the corporate policy. I can say in their defense that I received several flyers, brochures and a calendar within a few days of my first call. They advertise the perforated metal heavily in the options section. I expect there is a great deal of difference, just as with any company, from location to location. Dave

I priced a Morton Building in the spring, yeah it was higher than a pole barn, but a Morton is much more than a pole barn and has the best warranty on the market and when they leave it's done (on the outside)...finish the inside as time/money allows.
It would be in my yard now if the land survey crew showed up (they still never have) so I can get a deed on that piece of land seperate from the house.
Fortunately things have changed somewhat... I still want a Morton and when I get a garage/shop/studio it will be a Morton.
Check out the warranty. If it snows there you'll be happy with the Morton warranty.
I know an area church that's in a Morton Building. Some folks noticed a piece of paint flaked on the roof, Morton came and replaced the section.

I had a salesman come out from morton last weekend.54'x14'x75' is $32,000.Very good deal but I was looking for 40'x 60' so he priced it out at $19,000 without the standard morton options. Then we have a smaller company here that does them and for the 40'x64' with concrete will be $24000 or I can buy the package and put it up myself for $9000.By far the speed of install ,quality and most of all the warranty really makes morton shine.I have untill spring to make up my mind but I will most likely be putting it up myself.

I have all the final contracts from Morton. So far I am very pleased. They are close to 10k more than the small time builders. This is not a project I could ever do myself. I have plans to meet the sales person at my property in three weeks if old man winter stops spitting snow. Dave

Dave, I think you got a good thing going. Your building will be beautiful and most of all FINISHED. That really is the important detail. When I do my cost benefit analysis I find that the finish work is where I lose the advantage doing it myself. The finall details drag on forever.
