Dan,
Around here there are ads in the papers that you come and cut and haul, x$ per pickup load. Saves you all the work but then you have people on your property. Besides if you sell enough of it then you could justify a new logsplitter!!!!!

Hey CowBoyDoc,

I thought about letting people come in and get the wood but I won't do that for a couple of reasons. Having people on the property will drive me nuts. I know they will throw cans/bottles/wrappers/etc on the ground. Littering is a Real Hot Button for me. I just can't stand it. Its lazy and disrespectful. I'm going to catch one of the contractors littering one day and he is going to get a tongue lashing he won't forget. Can't stand it.

That right there is The Reason I won't have people on the property.

Another one is Liability. NC state put out a paper I read about landowner liability. The best way to prevent any liability was to post your land and keep people off. The worse thing to do, liability wise, was to charge someone for the use of the land. I would think that picking up the wood even if already cut would fall into that. Having them cut up the wood would be worse I would think. So that is a no go.

And if that is not enough. One of the land clearing/driveway building contractors said he could not GIVE AWAY cut up firewood. He had access to tons of cut up wood. All people had to do was pick it up and split it. They only wanted it for free if it was already SPLIT! Go Figure.

Log Splitters. I slaved over one of those noisy, smelly, hydraulic beasts on very hot and humid summer in the Ohio valley. I mean right in the valley with farm frontage on the Ohio river. HOT AND HUMID! And I'm a Florida Boy, I know Hot and Humid but at least in Florida you usually have a breeze. Not in the Hell Hole of the Ohio Valley. You don't get now stink'n wind!

I have a splitt'n wedge on a stick that works wonders. I think it is as fast as the smelly hydraulic beast I used to use at least on straight grain wood. Both the wedge and the hydraulic beast provide a good back work out but I really think the manual splitter is faster....

LH,

I was born in Orlando and still have family there. Not many but some. As I kid I lived in Dade City, which ain't anywhere near Miami, Tampa, and SanAntonio which ain't anywhere near Texas. I moved back to Palm Beach country back in 1981 and lived for a few years in Broward before I had enough of what the Big Mouse did to O-Town and the BigCityYankees did to South Florida.

Do you pronounce Miami as MiamE or as Miama?

I'm in the processing of putting in a Taylor 750 waterstove. It was used and I refirb'ed it. Took a sanblaster to it and did several days of welding it. It's about 10 years old and was involved in a fire. but the thing looks brand new now. I've got a hvac man coming out to install the exchangers in the house and I ran the pipes 200' to my barn. We afre looking foreward to fireing this up and save $2.10/gal for propane. Several other folks just around us here in Apex NC have Taylors and have gotten plenty of great use from them. I have access to all the wood I need just for the cutting. And most I don't even need to split.

Hi Gary,
Welcome to the group. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I'd be interested in your opinion of the "smoke problem" others have commented on.
I'm considering a Taylor.

let us know when you get some operating-time on it.

Dan,

You've been around some. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

My Mom lives in Avon Park somewhat So. of "O", down hwy 27 (till we can get her moved out here...she's 85).

My-am-e! (But nowadays "Me-ah-me" is probably popular with the residents (...a little "Spanish-flavor" there /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif)

Dan,

...meant to add:
My-am-e was predominant in my day/crowd, but you did hear My-am-uh (as in Alabam-uh) less frequently /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

Don,
My first "hands on" look at one of Central Boilers furnaces was at the NYS Woodmens Field days. The dealer there had an actual cut away view of a furnace. What sold me on them was (1) the construction of the furnace and (2) the warranty. According to the dealer, the initial units produced by CB came with a 6 year warranty. After a few years of production, CB changed the warranty to 10 years. In addition to this,
CB made the decision to change the 6 yr warranty on the initial units to 10 years. That got my attention concerning how the company feels about their product.

If you do make it to the show, I'm sure there will be other manufacturers there. It will be to your advantage to give them all a once over. Also, ask the manufacturers for the names of people that live near you who have purchased units. That will be the best source of opinions you'll ever get. Good Luck.

Hey, is that an oil truck that just went by my house............../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

LH,

You got the pronunciation just right. I think the real old timers, prior to the Yankee Invasion of South Florida in the 20s-30s, pronouced Miami as My-am-uh.
