Hakim,

One problem with the "tasers" that shoot out the electrical leads is that they shoot out electrical leads. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The problem is that both wires have to hit flesh to shock. If only one hits and the other one misses the things don't work. Soomeone is wearing heavy winter clothes the taser can be problematc. And can wind or the movement of the user or target.

Another problem with the flying leads is the eyes. There is a risk that the leads will hit someone in the eyes and cause injury and blindness. That really should not be an issue but it is. I think this is why many Law Enforcement agencies DONT use these kind of stun guns.

The problem with the stun guns that don't shoot electrical leads is that they don't shood electrical leads. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif This means that the user has to be within touching distance of the bad guy which is NOT goodness. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

OTOH, I think they can be a deterant. I had an opportunity to be shocked a few years ago. I turned down the offer. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif The sight of electricty bouncing across two leads on the taser was enough for me to say NO! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And if we TBNers are not average are we above or below average? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

ALan L,

In theory, the fact that an officer has been sprayed in training allows them to testify in court to the direct effects of the tear gas, OC, or stun gun. Every one knows that it is a bad thing to get in the head with a chunk of wood or metal much less get shot. A lawyer can hype up the use of spray or stun guns but I think that this is limited if the officer has been hit during training.

dmccarty:

An excellent point about court testimony. As usual, the officer decides in a few seconds and has years to justify his decisions.

However, while observing several "volunteers" go through the pepper spray, I observed a vastly different effect on different people. What it proved to me, was that if you sprayed a person, he might react within a few seconds or less, or it might take 5-15 or 20 seconds. If I spray a subject, then what do I do, wait to see if it works; get rid of it and draw a firearm or what? If the subject is wearing glasses, then it is even less effective. A person pumped up on drugs or adrelanine can cover 30 feet in a couple of seconds. Plus the wind must be taken into account or you could spray yourself.

The problem with the old mace was that it affected light skinned, light complected people more than dark skinned, dark complected people. Margo Kidder would feel it faster than Opra Winfrey, and it didn't work on dogs, whereas pepper spray will affect a dog.

A tazer is also bulkier to carry and needs a fresh charge. My S & W revolver and my Sig Sauer semi-automatic were always ready.

An interesting issue.

bin nailed a few times really hard jist by static doin linework...worst one was on the outer banks of north carolina
..think we were in waves or rodanthe at that point and we were puttin in new poles 20' taller for a transmission line above the distribution circuit!!! usin a 90' hi-ranger bucket and had to pick up the existing lines which were 35,000v...
and 10's of thousands of amps ..the only 3phase circuit on the outer banks at the time!!!!!...the circuit had to be put into new hanging epoxilators(inlulators made of epoxy with a fiberglass core)...anyway we had to remove 10 pieces of spiral armorrod of of each phase....amazing how much thrashin can happen in a 2man bucket when the static on the armor rod in the corner of the bucket is accidentally transferred to my line buddies inner thigh.,...he backed into them /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif they went bouncin around in the bucket and got us both 2 or 3x /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.giflike bein in a horror movie with yellow jackets the size of pelicans.....that was a very sobering experience!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Our PD purchased enough tazers for all line officers.
We had the option of getting a 5 second "ride" or not.
Guess which option I chose? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I watched the young officers volunteer and for five seconds, watched them go completely stiff.
They work.
We have the Taser X26; shoots 15 feet pretty accurately.
With both barbs on a subject, no one we've tazed has had to have more than 3 "rides".
It really works the muscles hard.
After a few "rides", it's like running a 10k race!!!

In NC, there is no requirement that they be for police only.
Anyone can purchase them; but @ about $500-600 each (plus extra cartridges) , they don't have many civilian buyers.

Tazers and stun guns are really different things. The tazer shoots a couple leads to the victim/subject. The stun gun is hand held and you press the contacts against the victim/subject. The stun gun takes a 5 to 8 second application to bring a person down and it simply does not affect everyone. All the students in my qualifying class had to take a self inflicted jolt from a stun gun, usually in the leg. Not any worse that being punched in the leg. Certainly not enough to knock a person down or render them unconscious.
