Explanation of PTO Types

I've started researching compact tractors in order to purchase one in the near future. I've read Muhammad's book and that was a great help. I'm just a little unsure about the different PTO types. Can most attachments be used with most PTOs? Example: Can a post hole digger be used with a transmission driven PTO or do you need to have an Independent PTO? In my mind if it is a transmission driven PTO the tractor has to be moving for the PTO to work, is this correct? This will be a factor in my decision, because a post hole digger is a likely attachment that I will get.

Welcome to TBN.
Independent PTOs work regardless of what the transmission is doing. They are usually shifted in and out hydraulically and can be engaged (or disengaged) at any engine RPM.

Tranmission PTOs are driven through the tranmission, but today they are rare. PTO can still be used with tractor in neutral, ie to dig post holes you move to where you want the hole, then put the tranmission in neutral to use the PTO.

These days they have a "live" PTO that is kind of like the tranmission PTO, but is operated with a two-stage clutch. Mash the clutch down part way and the tractor stops, while PTO continues to run. MAsh the clutch all the way and the PTO stops.

Thanks a lot. The explanation and links cleared that up for me. Now if I can only cut this list of tractors down to a reasonable number I'll be in business.
