I don't recall the exact #'s now..... but I remember seeing the crawl-ratios calculated for a Unimog......pretty riduculous - at max, an inchworm would probably win the race, as you towed a mountain....

A wise-wrench I know (who's still building stock-cars) always said he wished light-trucks had 2 speed rear-ends.... long b4 the 10spds showed up.

Back when, IIRC, that was a moonshiner's trick - hot motor in a car, and a 2 speed truck rear end. Best of both worlds.

I wish my ton truck had a 2 speed rear. The not so mighty 6.5 would be a different machine if it had one. If you had 1000 foot pounds of torque or a 10 speed trans you wouldn’t need one but a 5 speed with 200 hp and like 400 foot pounds leaves room for improvement.

I gave my nephew a sweet F150 extended cab with 6 and 5spd and dual tanks... A/C was out but body and original paint as new...

It's a great truck and really does ride well... in fact just about everyone comments on ride and seatbelts for 6

When I was young I worked at a hole in the wall truck bed manufacturer. We had just put a large lumber dump on a Ford L9000. It was middle of winter and for some reason that 350 cummins wouldnt start. Parts manager had a Chevy stepside with a built 396 and 44” mudders. He tried his best to pull that truck to get it started but all that automatic would do was stall out. He had never changed his gearing to compensate for the tall tires.
I took my 79, 150 with a 300 six and bulldog tranny and pull started it. With the tranny and transfer case in low it crawled.
The parts manager said if his truck couldnt pull it there was no way mine could. The crew never did let him live that down.

Somebody had stalled his F350 dumptruck straddling lanes just below the crest of the hill. I stopped and offered to help because it was a bit of a hazard. He laughed at me and said that my little Toyota could never move his big truck so I put it into 4 lo, put my bumper against his and started pushing. About the time that it began moving he decided to get in, take it out of gear and start steering it. I'm lucky that one didn't come back and bite me in the tail.

5spd with transfer case is why it was perfect for teaching the kids to clutch and drive a stick...

No one stalled when in first and compound low.

I've pulled out several in ditches and even a modern pickup across the San Mateo/Hayward Bay Bridge with my bone stock 1930 Model A Ford pickup with 3spd... not even the granny low 4spd.

The wife of the guy I was pulling off the Bay Bridge asked if I could shorten the tow rope so it would look like the new Chevrolet was pushing the 75 year old Ford.

I know quite a few folks (including me) that would jump at that configuration in a heartbeat.

Sad to see no "domestic" pickups left with a stick offering today..... the only downside to some eras of Ford stick tranis was that the slave cylinder was not external, needing a drop to change.....

I like your Model A story, a lot.

I wouldn't say I've done a lot of long distance in Model A's... mostly day trips... longest to the National meet when it was in Reno up highway 50 over the Sierra and back on 80...

Great trips but not if you are in a hurry... Sweet spot is around 45... but can do 65 stock but it's pedal to the metal and not good for longevity...

Wish I had a picture towing modern iron with old school .. sure did get lots of thumbs up when cars passed and realized what was happening...

With the Model Ts sometimes hills to long and steep so I had to go up in reverse and this is to get gravity flow gas to carb...

Nephew out with 150 tonight delivering Christmas Trees... he loves his pickup and one of the few when he was high school.... we are not really in pickup country.

His Dad has F250 super duty diesel with awesome power...
