Not Knowing the internal workings of this machine, would it be a bad thing to replace the rear 16in tires with 18in. Will it hurt the drive train when in 4wd.

Big no no. Search rolling circumfrence ratio. If you are going to change the size of the rear tires, you also have to change the size of the front tires to matain the rolling circumfrence ratio of your tractor. Or I guess in the case of a F series, if you change the size of your front tires, you will also need to change the size of your rear tires. Sorry, I was thinking tractor, not front mount mower.
