F250 fuel economy question

Just keep in mind that the O/H trip computer also figures idle time into the equation. That is 0MPG....If it is reset it will be reasonably accurate, most of us dont reset it that religiously though...

The overhead is usually off by at least .3 to .7 mpg.
Is that high or low or never know. My '04 F250 overhead is always about .5 higher than what I calculate using odometer reading.

We have a 2001 F250 short bed, extended cab with around 105,000 miles. Don't remember the rear-end on it though. I believe it is a 4.10 though. My wife gets right at 20 mpg with the truck. I get closer to 18 mpg. If the mileage starts to drop, it is a good bet the air filter needs changing.

Hauling is a different story. Depending on the load and terrain it will be anywhere from 16 mpg to 10 mpg. Our loads rarely get much above 8,000 lbs and the trips are usually under 400 miles round trip. There have been a couple 2,000 mile round trips, but those were lighter loads. Probably around 5,000 to 6,000 lbs.

With our current uses, we expect many, many more miles out of our truck. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bill,

The computer is always off on the high side which is bad. Being off on the low side would be ok but I don't think it has ever been low. Its always telling me I'm getting better milage than what is really happening.

I should have noted that with my travels and mileage assessment, I figured my mileage manually after fill up. I compared them to my digital computer reading, which was also reset, and found them very close (0.2--computer higher on the first) and exact on the second. Interestingly, the Banks programmer module seems to very accurately "predict" fuel economy. Before I installed the system, I ran an 80 hp chip from Superchips (about four months). My trip computer consistently read numbers of 17-19 in town and 22-24 on the highway, but when I manually figured them, they were about 4-5 mpg high!!!! Somehow, the module was "fooling" the trip computer, because the numbers just did not add up. Now, with the current system the manual and computer numbers correlate well most times.

I can see where a chip could "fool" the o/h computer. The chip will, in most cases, modify a sensor reading to demand more power. Another fator may be tire size..That would also be year depentant on how the mileage if figured(from what sensor)..

HGM,

Never had the computer checked out. Figured its just they way it works. I only use the computer's milage as a guide anyway.

The more replys I read on this topic, the more I think I need to have my truck checked out by a dealer; especially while it is still under warranty. I have a 2004 6.0 extended cab 4wd F250 w/ 25,000 miles. When I first bought the truck, I was getting 20-21 mpg staying under 2000 rpm doing almost entirely highway driving. Then during the winter I started having some hard start issues until finally one morning it just would not crank. When it finally did crank it looked like a smoke bomb went off and ran rough. Fuel mileage started to plummet. Had the truck checked out, they reprogrammed and replaced all of the glow plugs under warranty. During this same time, I moved houses and changed jobs. Commute became a 15 mile round trip w/ a little stop and go traffic. Still stayed light on the pedal. Since the work and the job change, I have yet to get over 15 mpg. I still do some highway on the weekends mainly when we go on small trips, fuel mileage still is under 15 mpg. My normal mileage now is around 12-14 mpg. Do you all think this is normal, or should I take it in immediately. I don't trust any of the dealers around here to do work, but I have heard of one nearby that does better work that I am thinking about taking it to. What do you think? By the way this is true mileage checked on almost every fillup w/ odometer and amount of gas I put in. 350 miles on odo and 26 gallon tank.

My '04 F250 SD Crew Cab FX4 6.0 gets 16.5-16.8 mpg actual calculations (17.2-17.5 by the overhead display) from the day it was new to 31,000 now. I have checked most every tank full by the odometer and pump gallons. That is about 60% hwy/40% city. Now I admit to being a little heavy on the foot so I think it would probably do a little better if I tried. Have never had any problems with it though.
