F250 motor swap, 7.3 diesel

I put one of these in when I did my turbo rebuild last year. It was a huge improvement, added 5PSI of boost, lowered EGT's and spools up almost instantly. If you can swing it, I would highly recommend it.

Sounds like a fun project. How many miles on the donor motor?

How long did it take you? I read the instructions and it seemed like "remove a bunch of clamps and bolts, swap turbo, put it back together", seemed pretty straight forward and then they wrote 2 to 9 hours:eek:

When I do things fir the first time in unfamiliar territory I usually add NOTHING to the time estimates. Nothing being a big fat zero, so I'd plan on 20 to 90 hours. :(

The first time you pull the turbo on a 7.3 you will do a LOT of cussing, there's a lot of stuff that you have to work on blind so you're at a real handicap. It probably took me a day and a half to remove and replace mine the first time but now, I could have it out, rebuilt and reinstalled in less than 2 hours.

Do NOT use an impact to get your wheel off with the trubo still on the truck (some will suggest that), take the time to pull it out and take it apart the right way. I had a mechanic rebuild my turbo the first time and he used an impact without my knowledge, 12k miles my turbo shaft broke and that's when I put the WW2 in with my rebuild. I actually had to get a new turbo cartridge for mine.

Best place for parts for smokers is Riffraff auromotive. I get all my 7.3 stuff there. All they sell and advise on is smokers.

I will be installing dorman bellowed up pipes, and a wicked wheel in the turbo. The turbo will be getting a 360° trust bearing rebuild kit also. It would likely be ok, it has no play in it, but with it and the donor motor having 378k miles, I figured it would be worth the $75 for the kit.

I hope to have as much done on the motor stand as possible. Turbo, up pipes, etc.

FWIW, I had a WW before my most recent rebuild, the WW2 is a very worthwhile upgrade from that.

Im watching, seeing some of your other projects i am sure you can pull this off without a hitch.

Me too.

I'm curious to see how he disassembles the truck to remove the engine??

Having pulled a few, on this one I'll lift the cab a few inches in the front to allow install with turbo in place.
