How about a screen box made of 1/4" or 3/8" wire cloth? Easy to form and trim for fit. Bigger clippings would stay outside and little stuff would be easy to blow out with air or water. Can inspect without taking anything apart.

Once a year I give my rigs a brief blast with a pressure washer - works like magic. Have fun, Dick B.

Thank you for the screen idea!

I will probably end up doing something like that in order to keep out the clippings, but first will just try blowing it clear with blower or air-hose.

gotta be careful with metal wire mesh around a battery. You may end up doing some unintended welding.

Yes you have a good point.
I think blowing with an air hose after each mowing will take care of this issue!

What was pact in there from previous owner must have been collecting and sitting there for years and had turned into dirt.

Update

I have now cleaned out what was hidden in-behind the original battery tray due to built up grass clippings having being siting there for few years.

Here is how the factory battery tray looked like before unbolting it and cutting out the welded in to the tractor frame mounting plate!

This is what was hidden behind the welded in steel plate:

After cleaning out loose rust, treatment with Rust Mort rust converter, one coat of primary and two coats of gray, followed by truck bed protector coating, the new battery tray attachments look like this:

New battery tray:

It was fair bit of work and now it's time to start reassembling the hydro-static transmission with all new seals and new swash plate cradle bearings.

Post some pics when you've got it all back together. Thanks for showing it to us. Dick B

Update:

The HST is all back together with all new seals and the mower frame is bolted together!

Some of the shaft oil seals had shrunken just slightly in their outside diameter, causing them to be just a little loose in their housing, which explains some of the HST oil leaks.
There were also worn O-ring seals in the 4 wheel drive clutch lock lever & PTO shift levers causing small leaks, which could be corrected only by taking it apart.

There is lot of work involved in details and I think this type of inspection / overhaul should only be attempted by someone willing to do the homework.
Kubota WSM is certainly helpful & pretty well must have, but it does not cover even close to everything!

More to follow later.
