F450 with PTO???

In my fire dept., it is used to drive a pump for water. Both trucks are GM with allisons and cat motors. You engage the pump, put the truck in drive (make sure the parking rake is on) and it automatically goes to 5th gear. Once the pump/pto is engaged, it disconnects from the driveline so the truck won't be in gear also. We can pump water over 120psi, which is pretty strong out of a 2" line.

as was said before, these used to be commonly available on all trucks. virtually any standard shift transmission with a cast iron case would have small plates on the sides where a gear drive pto could be mounted. likewise, gear drive cast iron case transfer cases had the same. they became less common as aluminum cases became more common.

if you search ebay or craigslist you will likely find a variety of pro driven implements. in a way it is like a tractor: once you have the pto attachment you can attach most anything to it. i used to have a 75 ford ton with a hydraulic dump body that was powered that way. as was also noted, large winches also were driven off of them. i'm sure the sky is the limit if you can figure out a way to attach the device.

one thing to note: like a tractor, the pto speed is in proportion to the engine speed. many older vehicles had a manual hand throttle to set the speed up. because of this, it's probably better suited for short use items, like a winch pull or dump body. you wouldn't want an application that required you to turn the truck at 3500rpm constantly.

1994 dodge 2500 4x4 diesel......hate it, but wife wont get rid of it. was too heavy to be sold for cash for clunkers......

I used to have a '99 F-350 with the 6 speed that had the PTO option too. Though I never had a need for it.

Are you guys running a PTO pump, or a midship?

Our engine has both. The PTO pump works off the tranny. For wildland fires, we can pump and roll; we pump to a 1-1/2 hoseline and will drive while a FF uses the hoseline in advance of the enigin(25' long hoseline). The engine also has a midship pump. When it is activated, it does disconnect the driveline; the engine is stationary. We pump in drive gear.

The PTO pump has lower flow and pressure. The midship pump can pump in excess of 250psi, and 1250gpm.

Our water tender/tanker, has a PTO pump only. It will pump in neutral or in gear; you can pump and roll with it. It is lower pressure and flow(off the top of my head about 500gpm).

It is lower pressure and flow(off the top of my head about 500gpm).

Not to threadjack, but if the pump on your tender/tanker is NFPA rated you should be able to pump the full 500 GPM/150 psi per NFPA requirements...:thumbsup:

Yes, it is a tender in our parts. If you get on the radio and ask for a tanker around here, you're going to get an aircraft... Maybe even that converted DC10 jet...

The pump on WT-28 goes higher than 150psi; just not sure off the top of my head at my regular job...
