I致e been doing a little aluminum welding, but my welder doesn稚 have a two cylinder rack. The twin cylinder rack was over $300 which outside of my budget. I致e been welding with the cylinder just standing next to the welder. It worked, but I knew it wasn稚 safe. I was also too cheap to buy a certified in use valve guard, so I thought I壇 make my own. I bought a new cover from my welding supplier for $8. The cylinder is a piece of sch 20 sprinkler pipe that I had on the scrap pile. I saved the rolled groove because it would help strengthen the edge. I Then cut the cap off just above the swell. There is a 1/8 flat plate that I traced the outside profile of the sprinkler pipe and the inside of the valve cap. Used the band saw to out the lines and then welded the connecting slot closed. I ended up with an oversized washer. The notch in the pipe was roughed in on the band saw and then cleaned up with a die grinder. Total cost? $8.
Yea, it痴 not certified, but for a home application I think it痴 better than leaving the cylinder unguarded.
