I too took the screwdriver to a oil filter. It did the same thing. Ripped the oil filter top off completely. A giant mess of oil everywhere on me and the cardboard i was working on in my parents driveway. I then "broke" the neighbors oil filter removal tool (a longer version of my cheapo type of harbor freight tool but at the time made in Taiwan as they were the USA's junk maker). AFter all that I ended up with a chisel banging on it with a 2 lb sledge at an angle. Slowly it relented but again after hours of just getting the filter off I finished in the dark at 10pm so i could go to work the next day. But, I got lucky compared to another guy in my office. He had a nearly new Monza at the time. He changed his oil and ended up with a double oil gasket (one stayed on and new one on new filter) and it worked loose on him on the highway. Lost all his oil, blew the engine and he missed work for a few days. I consider my problems minor still compared to that.
