What I know about farming you could put in a teaspoon, but I have almost 40 years in the seafood industry. I consistently find here that government (influenced by the major producers) consistently shuts down the little guy. Y for example is my crab for me to sell to an individual person (illegal for me to do so) and yet that same crab I can sell to a major seafood producer for nickels on the dollar who then sells it to the consumer legally? I wonder if that is not what we see here happening and will see more of it as homegrown and locally produced food take a bigger and bigger chunk out of agribigbusiness? Just my 2 cents.

That is the biggest fear of a lot of people. I believe it was the biggest part of the NAIS fight. When big business owns the politician who controls the government agency we have a BIG problem. When we have Supreme Court Justices that are from major corporations and making ruling for those same companies, we have a BIG problem.

I think the hardest thing for a lot of the older farmers in this country to realize is that the product they buy from the grocery store today is not what they bought 40 years ago. Our food comes from a government aided corporation, not a farm.

I see this alot ... why are people so down on corporations? I wouldn't run my businesses if they were not corporations. I refuse to lose my home and property to some arbitrary lawsuit because someone left their meat out all day on the counter before cooking it to a too low internal temperature and got sick.

While some corporations are just plain evil, they aren't inherently evil by nature ?

The corporation is run by individuals that are therefore largely protected from criminal prosecution. Protecting your family and personal assets is one thing. But we are talking about large corporations that have big money which buys them "favor" from politicians. They are able to use the corporation's money in ways that would benefit not just the corporation, but their own pockets. Many of the individuals care very little about the product their company produces. It's all reduce cost and who cares about it's safe. Not like they'll be put up on trial for manslaughter.
Isn't it just yesterday that Nokia? annouced a large quarter profit AND that they will lay off 1800 workers.... It's all about the stock price which is money in the top executives pockets....

How do you figure they get those big profits =) Benefits and salary for those 1800 people are probably in the area of $135M ... lay offs aren't always a bad thing ... companies need to reboot every once in a while to keep themselves from getting too bloated.

The same type of behaviour guys running big business do can be found on smaller scale of virtually every employee out there. Skipping work early, rushing a job because they took a long lunch, having a late night before and not being up to the task in the morning. All of these actions are done to the cost of the corp and to the risk of the consumer, all because the employee didn't want to lose money (taking a day off to a hangover costs money)

It's human nature to want to get something for nothing ... running a corporation is no different

So if you make the profit of 135M, why do you THEN start the layoffs. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying layoffs are part of the cyclical nature of business, and a good way of removing the bloat. I have a bigger problem when a corporation gets too big (like the government) to be able to make the correct decisions.
An individual or small company is less likely to affect as many people when they screw up, and more likely to feel the impact from their screwups.

So if you make the profit of 135M, why do you THEN start the layoffs.
Because you either A) realize that you could have made $200 million without the excess staffing, or, more likely, B) you look to future market predictions and realize that you won't need the current level of staffing to meet those future needs.
