I have a 54" front mount snow blower on a 2320 jd tractor. Today it stopped throwing snow out of the chute. I checked the shear bolts, all good. The fan spins freely but I cant see any shear bolts on it. Any help would be appreciated. Geo.

There should be a shear bolt on the back of the fan shaft that connects it to the drive shaft

"...stopped throwing snow out of the chute."

If the fan is turning, the chute is clogged. If the fan isn't turning and the and the pto drive shaft is, and the shear bolts are all good, then the fan shaft is broken between the shear coupling and the fan.

If the 54" is like the 47", there is a paddle like bar welded to the shaft (in front of the fan and another right behind it . A shear bolt connects the two. One will spin with the fan if the bolt is sheared.

Edit: Just looked at JD parts and the blowers are different. Appears the only shear I can find on the 59 is a key between the shaft and the fan, (Also keys on the auger) You did say the auger spins and not the blower--correct? If so, the shaft is not broken.

Respectfully, keys are not used as "shear" devices;they transfer torque. They will only shear with loads well above any shear bolt strength and are more difficult to replace. That's why they put shear bolts/shear couplings on the pto driveshaft and the auger drive shaft. If there is an excessive torque load, the shear bolts are the "fuses" that protect the rest of the shafting, the tractor pto drive, and the blower gear box from major damage.

I don't disagree with you one bit. The only thing I could see on the parts diagram that had any chance of shearing was the key. (had that happen to a lawn mower once--hit a pipe) I don't know what they use in this case.

Geo, Are you sure you don't have a 47 inch blower. I just checked the JD parts catalog again and they onl have a 47 and 59 inch blowers listed. If it is a 47, the shear pin is in the two "paddle blades i referenced in an earlier post. If your not sure, post the model # of your blower.

The "key" doesn't have to shear to stop doing its job and allow the fan to spin freely. It can sometimes vibrate out of its channel which has happened on my Kubota blower. I was lucky enough to find it laying in the blower housing--otherwise, I wouldn't have had a clue as to the problem. Regards, Mike

here's a picture of the parts making up the fan on
the 54 blower. The 54 blower uses a lighter plastic
fan instead of steel like the 47, but they are interchangeable.

you may have lost the key (#6) that the drive hub (#3) has between
it and the shaft, or the plastic impeller may have gone
bad where that hex plate (#12) drives the impeller.
if you lost the key, then chances are you have loose
set screws in the hub allowing that hub and fan assembly
to slide on the shaft.

these plastic impellers are new with the 54 blowers.

Dutch, thanks for the pic.
Geo, the shear bolt is #4 on Dutch's attached pic.
