For you country living wannabees who want a taste of what country living is like before you buy your country property, see the attached linked article that appeared in yesterday's Washington Post.

Agtourism is becomming quite popular. People wanting to get away from the city for a bit. If you live near a "trendy" vacation area you might want to give it a try. Provide a bed and breakfast and some animals for kids, some chores for adults.

There you go /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.....get these city folks to pay you top dollar to rent a room in your farm house and have them do your farm chores as well. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bob, your post brought back a memory loud and clear from a decade ago. After driving through Nova Scotia, we took the ferry to St. John and drove down through Calais to Portland, Maine. It was the first week of October, which we didn't know (but found out) was the height of the leaf viewing/LL Bean shopping season. There was not a room to be found in or around Portland, but a kind desk clerk helped us find a B&B about 20 miles NW of town--billed as a quaint stay on a real sheep farm, and indeed it was. The proprietor was a sheep farmer who incidentally had a Ph.D. in Chinese language and studies and was a classical pianist on the side. The VW Vanagon we were driving had alternator problems, and our host loaned us her years-old Tercel (which also served as her sheep wagon /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) to go into town for dinner. The accommodations were seriously basic through the night; chilly and stark. But breakfast was fantastic, and our co-habitants were two women from New York City who looked out the dining room window and didn't know whether the livestock were sheep or cows /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. We have stayed in a lot of B&Bs before and after this one and always enjoy the experience, but the sheep farm always bring a grin. Thanks for reminding me of it!!

Rick...

There's something to be said for these farm/rural B&Bs. They may not always have the quaint comforts of 4 star hotels, but they offer real, down to earth opportunities to interact with just plain common folk who for the most part will be more than happy to share a bit about their farm. We've found some of the farm B&Bs to be started by city to country transplants who were just tired of the city grind and the urban way of life. In some cases, they were able to take their jobs and professions with them as they started up their B&Bs. It was real easy though to see where their first love was and they delighted in talking about the farm, the animals they're raising, barn and farm house renovation, general life in the country, etc. It's always an educational experience talking to some of these people.

My wife runs a B&B on our hobby farm and folks seem to love the getaway to peace and quiet. We don't have then doing chores etc. but they do enjoy walking on our trails and watching the birds around our ponds. Some discussion about Beefalo usually follows as we have a few of these bovine /bison crosses.

The accommodation is upscale with whirlpools, fireplaces, ensuite baths and lots of privacy. If you're travelling in central Ontario Canada and need a place of respite check out Resonance B&B .

Our experience has been that 99.9% of B&B travellers are wonderful, interesting, multi faceted, salt-of-the-earth folks.
