PB,
Round-up makes several types of weed killers. There is one that stays in the soil and kill weeds for at least three months. I have not seen it for sale in places like Home Depot but it is out there. You may be able to find it on line if interested.
Love the stuff too but am occasionally disappointed in the results.

I must have overlooked beenthere's reply. If I should have it all ready by early Sept, that only gives me only 6 to 8 weeks. While that should be enough time for me, I'd rather not be rushed and seed it too quickly before all the weed seeds have germimated and tilled under again and again. Why go through all that work to end up with lots of weeds? Even if I were to use round-up the seeds are still there. If I plowed it up nowand began to disc, it may sit there like that all winter, and I am hesitant to do that. It can be pretty windy here and I would be concerned with erosion on the big open patch of bare soil. Should that be a concern?

I'll try again to include the pictures.

And the second picture....

I'll be doing the entire area "above" the garden (which you'll see at the bottom of the picture) and also the unmowed ares behind the dead limb you see in the foreground.

With what you have said in mind I would:
1. Cut the current growth as close as possible and remove the cut material.
2. Plow now. You will not get a very deep cut the first time.
3. Disc several times before Sept.
4. Plant an annual cover crop like rye, wheat, oats or annual rye grass.
5. Next spring plow again.
6. Disc several more times. Smoothing out for the final seeding. Consider tilling the last time.
7. Plant perenial seed.
8. Keep cut to kill off new sprouting weeds.

Just my opinion.

I agree with Panache. Probably the most efficient and cheapest way to go. No matter what you do, you will not be able to get rid of all of the weeds. Follow his instructions and if you plant with good seed it will smother out most of the weeds, then use weed and feed fertilizer, this should take care of the rest over time.

Saint Augustine will choke out any weed. But sooner of later, you won't be able to get your mower through it. Then you'll have to plow it up and do it all over again. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Alps,
I see you are from New York, I think that should put you in the cool season grass region. September would be ideal for establishing a good lawn. Fall planting of Blue grass or Perennial ryegrass is optimum. Spring planting is discouraged unless you are going to irrigate your lawn. Beenthere has given you some good advice, have the lawn ready for September planting and seed it this fall. Next summer your children will playing in a smooth dense lawn. If you want a good resource for seed selection look at NTEP.org Have fun making your new lawn!

Panache --

Sound like a good plan. I like the idea of a cover crop for the winter so I can get started on this project soon. Thanks for you help.

It was suggested by the local farm store to use buckwheat as my cover crop. Would this be a good cover crop to use??
