Farm pro 2425 PTO speed?

I recently purchased a pto wood chipper and it states to run at 540 pto speed only. Does anyone know what the true 540 is ? Idle, half throttle, or full throtte? My lever is in 540.It seems that it doesnt perform well at idle speed (chips just barely shoot out). Half throttle peforms well but full throttle really works awesome. I just dont want to run it past idle if its going to ruin something.

I'm not familiar with the Farm Pro, but I'd be willing to bet its PTO speed is about the same as all the other tractors with which I've had experience, and that would be that PTO speed (540 rpm) is just a couple of hundred engine rpm below full throttle. On tractors without a tachometer, you can simply go to full throttle, then just back off barely enough to hear a slight change in the engine sound.

Your Y385 engine develops it's rated 25hp at 2350rpm. If I recall, revs for 540 PTO rpms is ~2200. Depending upon which instrument configuration you have, PTO speed may be indicated by a green area on the tachometer

Remember.. even on HST models.. pto speed is ratio locked with engine speed. There are a few epto systems in use that change this ratio for fuel savings and load management.. but generally.. your tach will indicate your 540 pto rpm.

A very few machines have hyd pto.. and those may be independent of actual engine speed, depending on volume and flow regulation ( if any ) that is used.

Assuming 2200 rpm on your machine produced 540 pto rpm.. and you say you were running at idle ? 1000 rpm? that would mean that your pto was turing at a brisk 245 rpm or so.... no wonder it performed pitifully... thats 'roughly' a 4:1 ratio engto.. etc. again.. these are assumed numbers.. and used for illustration only.. etc...

What if you set the PTO @ 1000 and worked at half throttle as long as the motor doesn't lug?? .I use 540 PTO speed and about 900 motor rpm's when I use my PHD and it works great. I guess brush hoggin and mowing would be a different story..

John: tha PHD and the WOOD chipper are very different critters, the wood chipper requires the higher speed to keep the chut clear of chips, I run my tiller at lower RPM and low range to keep from breaking stuff should I hit a big rock, my mower I run up near full on PTO speed of 2K rpm on engine this keeps the blade speed up and clears clippings just like the wood chipper requires. the brush hog SHOULD be run at a low speed as long as it cuts the material well then it is going OK, if you have to up the speed to cut higher stuff then upping it you do. as long as it is not struggleing or lugging then run it as slow as you want just ermember that diesel engens run best at their rated RPM so running it slower may cabon up the exhaust and run the engine cool in heat which translates to less fuel efficiency per hr of use per HP of output.

It's a matter of torque John. 900 engine RPMs is barely above idle; fine perhaps for PHD in light soil. Not much good for anything requiring even a modicum of torque though.

Your 224 engine only starts developing working torque from about 1100 RPM, eventually developing peak torque at 1700.

It's a 2 cylinder and I think has more torque than a 3 cylinder at lower RPM's. Longer stoke more torque.......

Yes John, a two cylinder generally develops more peak torque than a three cylinder of the same displacement. But that doesn't mean their torque curves differ significantly

I think the longer stroke builds more torque through the entire spectrum of RPM's. The only downfall is more wear and tear on engine components because 2 cylinders are putting out the HP instead of three cylinders. Like they say.... You can't beat cubic inches but stroke makes more torque.
