Set the engine RPM's at about 1900-2000 and "let her rip". Don't baby it. Diesel engines are made to work and run for extended periods of time in the "working "RPM ranges.
The worst thing you can do, is lug it at low RPM's.

Have you actually looked in your engine manual John? I've only got performance curves for three and four cylinders. Your book should have the two cylinder torque curve included on the engine performance chart. Torque is expressed as Newton-Meters or ME (N+M) from ~1100 to 2500 RPMs or so.

Or you could look at it like a 3 cyl has more components to wear out too...

I never looked at it that way. Also more friction and lost power but I guess everything has it's drawbacks. I was doing some loader work along side a 21 HP of another brand w/ a 3 cylinder and the guy took mine for a run and couldn't believe the difference. His would bog w/ a bucket load @ 1200 rpm's and mine wouldn't hesitate @ 800 Rpm's lifting a comparable load. He was impressed. Not to start a tractor war I won't mention his brand but my jinma has a rougher fit and finish, costs much less, had a few issues, and works like a bull on Steroids...

Torque is a big deal. I have a jd-b.. 2 cyl.. It is similar hp to a ford 4 cyl I have. Lugging ability is entirely different.

I can also run the 2 cyl to nearly a stall, and clutch or gass it and have it come back to life. The 4 cyl pretty much dies and won't come back if under 100 rpm.. etc.

Course there is a big rpm difference here too. The JD is only rated for half the rpm the ford is.. etc. Maybee less than half.

2 cyl out perform at low rpms but the 3 or 4 cyl out perform at higher rpms......based on torque chart I read somewhere....
