Farm Pro 2425 starts but will not stay running.

Thanks guys, WD 40 is great stuff. That is exactly what I did last night and it went right in to 4X4. That is what I was thinking when I posted yesterday since this tractor has been setting out in the elements since the previous owner bought it. Not sure he ever engaged the 4X4 and I know he never used the 3 PT hitch. I also topped off the hydro fluid now that the tractor is running and the FEL and steering are working (used up some of the fluid) and that made the 3 PT hitch come up much quicker, not real fast but I don't think it is supposed to be fast. I am learning a lot on this tractor and am learning to think more basic as opposed to working on my overly complicated truck or car.

for longer lasting lube, use some penetrant oil onthe shifter handle.. the wd-40 will flash off and leave no lube... it's pretty much only good for short term lube or dispersing water or removing stickers..

My favorite penetrating oil is a 50/50 mixture of Type A automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and acetone. The acetone enables the ATF to creep into the tightest frozen joints, bolts, etc and then flashes off pretty quickly leaving the ATF behind.

As a penetrating oil I find this mix far superior to WD-40, PB'laster, Kroil or Liquid Wrench and lots cheaper, too. Unlike WD-40, when the solvent evaporates from this mix the ATF left behind makes a good lubricant and pretty fair rust preventative.

A good, fairly cheap rust preventative for steel and iron is generic Vaseline (petroleum jelly) thinned with xylene and put in a metal pressure sprayer like the "SureShot." Vaseline is very similar to old-fashioned Cosmoline, just a lot cleaner. The xylene is a slow evaporating solvent that allows the Vaseline t creep into all the little nooks and crannies and saturate any rust present.

i do near the same but use naptha as my solvent for the atf. it's way easier on paint and rubber ( seals and orings ).. etc. and won't eat them like acetone will..
