As stated ad nauseum Ben, it's in stamped in kilowatts based upon "12 hour power". I know of no American equivalent for 12 hour power, so - unless some engineer pops in here to disagree - I'd have to say that would convert to net horsepower

Greg, I agree. The displacement, Compression ratio, and RPM for rated HP all look to me like net usable horsepower. I would suggest a drop of maybe 1 to 2 horse power max for PTO on a direct threw connection. I have searched all over and found nothing to indicate otherwise. The Chinese have not discovered marketing yet. In a few years it will be a peak instantaneous gross rating about 20% higher, like the big three.

I honestly can't find a metric definition for this "KW/12hr" rating. The decision to consider it "net" is based solely upon defining KW/24hr as "gross" or "peak".

From there I'm inclined to follow the long-standing rule of thumb for horsepower, derived from Chinese KW/12hr ratings:
1. engine horsepower = kilowatts x 13.41
2. PTO horsepower = engine HP minus 14%
3. drawbar hoserpower = PTO horsepower minus 14%

Working from 18.37 KW (net), that would rate a JM254 at
~24.7 engine hp engine,
~21.2 hp at the PTO, and
~18.2 hp at the drawbar
all presumably net values

The hp plate on the engine doesn't mean a whole lot. The punch line is , if you really want to know the horse power, take it to a dealer that has a dyno, and have them put it on the dyno to check it out.

Hey Yugo,

I agree, and I'm probably wrong as usual, but my suspicion, says, that the Dyno will agree with the HP rating on the Engine Plate.

So let's get the Dyno out and solve this question, once and for all.
