Thank you. When I drained approx 1 gal of coolant into a clean container, the liquid was just as bright yellowish-green, and clean, as if I'd poured it out of a new bottle of 50/50 mix. What worries me is the tightness of the fan blade when turned by hand; it wasn't locked up, just very stiff. Could this be a sign of a bad water pump? Of course, the belt was still on and tensioned, but wasn't turning w/the fan and water pump pulley assembly. This thing is a '68 model, and while not abused, it's been run hard for 46 years (I've had it for 2 years); probably has thousands of hours on it. Thanks for your help. Will let everyone know what I find out.

Can you slack the belt, and turn it by hand..?? There will be some resistance, but you can turn it somewhat easily.

After seeing the thermostat in the neck, I was wondering after looking at it, if it could have pivoted up with the rush of coolant, blocking the flow, and actually putting the sensor end towards the radiator. If that was the case, the water pump had to overcome the spring pressure for any coolant to flow. Pretty wild theory, but don't know if it was wedged there pretty good, or would pivot.

I would think if the water pump was dragging that hard, you'd be smelling the belt slipping.

If I were in your shoes, I would look at that water pump again. It should spin with little more than finger pressure on the end of the fan blade without the belt on the pulley. Given the age (I have a 1968) you may have a pump shaft that has some serious corrosion going on. Usually the bearing/seal fails first and water runs out around the shaft, but not always.
