Guss I should have asked for more info first. Runs for 10 seconds and dies is different than starts and dies right away as stated originally. I would agree that some new fuel and clean/replace filters should do the trick. Best of luck!

Close off the fuel at the bowl under the gas tank..then take the fuel line loose at the carb...these are metal lines (from the factory)..at the fuel line connection at the carb you will find a brass "strainer"..see if its clogged..if so you have found the culprit..also look in the tank with a good flashlight and see how much "rust" is in there around the walls etc. Once you do that come back and tell us what you find...BobG in VA

Ditto.

Also, give a couple of good whacks to the outside of the carburator. Good chance you have a sticky float after sitting for so long.

Hello Crw. My first guess would be fuel. BUT, did you check for a spark after it dies??? If you don't have spark when you let the key go, Not while turning it over, but when you let the key go. To test, use a jumper wire from the battery to the coil. If it keeps runing you have an electrical problem, from the key to the coil.

That is the direction I was headed with my first post, losing spark. After talking with my father in law again about what happened, the broken spring was some sort of a automatic timing advance/****** to assist when cranking the motor by hand. Not motor timing as I mistakenly first said. Once the motor fired it was suspossed to return to normal timing. His tractor didn't sit for a couple years, it ran fine then 3 hours after being parked it would start then imeadeatly die. I think the problem is fuel related after learning that it runs for 10 seconds then dies. Im anxious to hear what it is. Good luck!

I have a Cub Lo Boy that the sediment bowl cork gasket was deteriorated in. The little pieces of cork would clog the outlet and cut off the flow of fuel. You couldn't see anything and the bowl was clear so was a bit frustrating:mad:
