Farmall Super A question

My boss has asked me to inquire about a Farmall Super A that he saw in a paper. I know nothing about these older tractors. Can someone instruct me as to what I need to look for or be aware of? The price is 2750 and looks to be in good shape in the picture. It also includs a cultivator. Thanks.

Mornin Bill,
I have a 49 Super A and a 42 A. They are great little tractors and can do a good amount of work fot there size. Im almost finished rebuilding my Super A, I payed $700 for it but have done quite abit of work to it so far! If the tractor is good mechanically, transmission is good, good hydraulics, good compression, tires good and everything else works that is not a bad price. I have seen them go from $2500 up to $5000 for a mint tractor. You also want to check the brakes, if they are bad its a pain to replace them. You have to remove the final drives, quite a bit of work for a brake job. If you do have to replace them you may as well change all the seals on them also! If your not familiar with that tractor find someone that is and let them go check it out!

Scott, thx!..Thats just the kind of info I'm lookin for. The tractor is in Wisconsin and I'm in NY, but I'm not sure how serious my boss will be about this tractor. I would like to at least be able to ask some valid questions over the phone. Thx again.

Go over to YT Mag and look at the "Articles" section. There is tons of info on inspecting and buying old tractors.

On those A's, keep an eye on the front of the engine, where the front axle bolster connects... check for cracks in the front of the block.

Hi Robert,
Yes thats a good point. Ask if the block has ever had the water jacket cracked behind the carb and or repaired ??? Also as Robert mentioned, check the front casting steeringbox assembly carefully!
