A friend was over and we spent the good part of the day moving equipment around. A couple of times I did dash under a raised loader. Just how fast will a loader come down if a line breaks? It can't be that quick.

A lot more accidents happen when an operator (of any tool or machine) gets distracted by someone or something rather than something like a hose failure etc...

Not the right way to look at it... as you are dashing, you trip and the thingy you are holding gets wrapped around the lever and...

Not quite sure what you mean, but often it's just easier to take a short cut under a suspended load. My Wheel loader drops at frightening speed when the joystick is pushed forward all the way (unlike my JD Ag loader) but I wonder if it would drop at that rate if a hose burst.

They can drop significantly faster with a blown hose than putting them into float.

Well, if I make a mad dash and am in danger for half a second, AND the hose bursts, AND I am actually hurt or killed, I will accept that as my destiny.

My cats have clear instructions, never to touch the controls. For the one, always jumps in the Wheel Loader.

I’ve never seen a hose break completely into without being hit. For that matter I’ve never seen a hose break in any form while it was only holding a load. I really doubt a blown hose will drop the load faster than float in most conditions.

Just saying that it typically is not one thing going wrong at a time that kills you. It is the freak thing that two bad things happen at the same time. Good safety practices generally eliminate the one thing... the other is out of your control.

And, on that note, it got me thinking last night. A loader cylinder has two hoses. Really, only one hose is going to break, so you still have safety in the other hose, no?

But, and it's something I can't figure out. When I took a fitting off my BH stabalizer, I figured no big deal, I don't need it on, can use the machine while I wait for a hose. The fluid poured out under pressure. It's open center. My Cushman is the same way. There isn't a hydraulic fitting on the machine you can undo with the machine running!

And, on that note, it got me thinking last night. A loader cylinder has two hoses. Really, only one hose is going to break, so you still have safety in the other hose, no?

No, they loop together. That second cylinder will buy you time because it’s more fluid to push out but it’s still coming down.
