Farmer crushed by machine when dog moves control

Not sure I followed this: dog or something else move directional lever into forward...but I see no comment on how the truck was found. Was it sitting there choked off due to pushing into a gate it could not push out of its way or drive over? Or was it sitting there with it still pushing against him into the gate like an auto transmission might do? Or was it now in neutral? Maybe the lever's position design will allow the dog's weight to be enough to hold it down to drive forward without locking it in forward and when it moved off the lever to move back into neutral.

Regardless of those thoughts sad. All it takes is the simplest mistake.

I don’t think a regular pickup truck was involved in the accident. Although I never saw a picture of the equipment that was. And I really doubt it was the dogs fault. I’ve never seen a piece of equipment that could roll against a working parking brake it idle. Especially being dropped into gear without any use of the clutch.

June of last year?

Nope, the dateline for the story was for yesterday.

The incident happened in England and you would know the "Manitou truck" as a type of telehandler.

Freak accident... always sad. Hate also the story of someone driving along a freeway and an object from oncoming traffic takes them out. Nothing one can do. Prayers to those.

A friend has a couple of those Manitou Telehandlers. Not sure how a dog could press the pedal. It should not move just by moving the shuttle leaver. The center position is not a PARK position.

Sad accident. Poor guy didn't wake up that morning figuring he was going to die!

Often, I could leave my utility vehicles so you just hop in and press the pedal, but instead make sure I put on the E-Brake, thinking of the cats!

Yipes, didn't it have a seat switch??.. it shouldn't be going into gear unless you are sitting on the seat!..

Not much industrial and big ag has seat switches.

I was at my friends (with the Manitou Telehandlers) today to pick up a SS Snow bucket. His FW/REV control (more of a joystick) is feathery smooth, almost scary. He says that machine "generally" won't move ahead without (foot) throttle BUT his other machine will! I did notice a hand brake.

My Kubota wheel loader has a lock, you can engage on the f/r lever as well as a lock on the park/drive control, but I have never once used it. Maybe if I had a Jack Russell.

I try not to get out of or off of any of my equipment without setting the emergency brake. Have learned that lesson the hard but not fatal way on several occasions.

Got pinned against a gate by my granddaddy's 49 Dodge PU when I was just a young feller. I guess adrenaline kicked in cause I somehow mustered the strength to push it up the incline off of me and jump to the side before it hit the gate again.

I have also done the stupid and had my JD855 creep away after getting off but so far I've been lucky. I don't get off it any more without setting the brake and lowering any 3pt attachments.

At the VERY, VERY LEAST, you gotta pay attention! Always, be expecting it to move when it shouldn't.

Really does not make a hilll of beans of difference how it happened. The fellow is dead and that is that.

Why has it become some difficult for humans to think for themselves? Slick, dangerous winter driving conditions around here, yet one stupid jackarse on your tail after another!

CLEARLY, no evidence at all of using a brain!

of course it matters:shocked: many people can be saved by noting how the accident happened, and never doing that!.. sometimes many people have to learn common sense!..

It’s this guys fault he’s dead. Mistake 1, bringing your dog in the cab. Mistake 2. Failing to set the parking brake. You could say there was other mistakes but it wouldn’t have happened without mistake #2.

My Kubota has 2 gear gear selectors and forward reverse lever on the left side of the steering wheel. A couple of years ago the tractor was warming up and the 2 shifters were in gear and the reverse lever in neutral. I went to throw my coat up behind the seat and it caught on the reverse lever and the tractor jumped backwards into my shop door with the snowblower on. We don't learn everything the first day but I'm much more cautious now.

Watch others, lock any and all safety devices (e brakes, etc), and NEVER trust hydraulics to hold.
All accidents are unfortunate, always put safety first.

My BIL's sister's husband was killed because a rented Bobcat hydraulics failed and crushed him. He was digging a hole and climbed in the hole under the bucket. He was building their new home and she was at work. Came over to find him at the end of the day... tragic.
