The better thing to do would have been to crush it with your foot and then asked the bank if they had a dumpster to put it into. Technically, all hypodermic needles are considered hazardous waste and require special disposal of the needle itself.
I know they are hazardous waste and should be disposed of as such, but you don't crush it with your heel because you will release whatever if anything is inside onto the ground. The procedure we used was to put them in special holders for safe handling and then dispose of them. The holder resembles a toothbrush travel container ( we use to use the new ones for that too /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif and I still have some) Breaking it or monkeying with it was discouraged as that is how people usually stick themselves and as I said you can release what is inside.
Fortunately this one was capped and I eventually disposed of it safely. I could have gone 2 blocks to the local police station
and let them chuck it but I had about 5 minutes to get my son from school so the choices were limited. I either pick it up and go, or leave it.
