Will farming make you a millionaire? YES, but only if your a billionaire. That's the way I understand it, lol.

I have 9 chickens and I'm pretty sure it costs a whole lot more to feed and keep them as it does for a dozen eggs at Walmart. But hey, I love them and they love me and that's the extent of my farming. chickens.jpg

I would like to see/hear from farmers on how it is trying to make a living off farming.

My assumbtions/thoughts
1) Farming is like any business, there are good ones and bad ones gotta know what your doing and run it like business.

2) it helps if your small to get into niche or specialty items. Don't try to compete with walmart on the price of eggs, sell something that there is a demand for that they don't sell, quail eggs maybe

3) value added, instead of just selling apples sell carmel apples, apple pies, apple juice/cider, apple butter and deer apples and even sell apple tree seedlings.

4) add products that work together apples and bees

I'd be interested in a farming forum though I wouldn't be able to speak very often, as I've only 30 acres.

Right there with you, at 21 acres we wont be competing in any volume way. Guys around me doing corn and soybeans on 600 plus acres. Good advice above, find a niche market or go to a farmers market and find out what people want that they don't have. Also, look for ethnic groups in your area that might be looking for a special product or one that is grown a specific way.

I haven't even started yet and have had people ask me if I grow or produce certain things, they would like to buy from me.

Also, don't go all in on one thing as a catastrophe can wipe you out. A blight or fungus that attacks what you grow can be weathered if you have a diverse product line.

Good luck, and don't listen to those that say it must be done a certain way. Unless they tell you not to grow potatoes in the road... ;-)
