Father in Law wants a Handheld Gas powered earth auger

.....Can you tell me about your pups? I grew up with a silver sable that had Rin Tin Tin As a distant relative.

My boy Mickey passed away April 23, 2012 and my little girl Minnie went to her final sleep January 15, 2016. Mickey was 50 days short of his twelfth birthday and Minnie was one week past her fourteenth birthday. Both of them were large dogs for GSD and were supposed to be purebreds according to the owners of their Dam and Sire (they were brother and sister from two different litters) but I had no papers for them. They certainly looked to be purebred though. Neither dog was fat, far from it, but Mickey was 135 lbs in his prime and Minnie was 105 lbs. I originally got Mickey for yard security and 18 months later Minnie to keep Mickey company but they immediately became much more than just security dogs. Minnie gave the appearance of an alert self confident dog from a distance and looked much more intimidating than she actually was. When it come right down to it she would back off and even pee herself if cornered. Mickey on the other hand was very territorial and not to be challenged in any way on his home turf. When I would take him for walks though he was friendly with everyone (as was Minnie) so I know it was just a territorial thing.

There isn't a day goes by that I don't think of them.

The trouble with dogs is that we have a longer life span. Even their picture gave me a warm feeling. Knowing you had them for a generous time considering the average lifespan of the breed, I am saddened that they are not with us. Belated condolences on the loss of your fine canines Mace.

I like my Harbor Freight auger. The only problem is support when it comes to needing parts. The fuel tank on mine (its an older model) developed a leak at the seam of the molded plastic gas tank and this model has been discontinued so that I cant buy a replacement. So I need to pour out the gas when I am done using it. Also the auger bit was not ground at the correct angle for biting into the ground so I had to regrind it with an angle grinder. Other than those issues the engine always starts by the third pull and it digs into hard Texas clay quite well.

With your leaking gas tank, have you looked at plastic welding it? I have plastic welded numerous things with good results the biggest trick is to find the right filler plastic to add in.

I just learned something new! I googled plastic welding and had I known of it I probably would have tried it. As it is, I mixed up some JB Weld and covered the seam. It didn't work 100% but was good enough that the fuel seeps very slightly. Had I known about plastic welding at the time I could have washed out the tank and probably just ran the heat gun over the seam to re-melt it. Oh well...
