According to my observations, this (fatique) is not considereded much when designing implements in general and s-tines in particular or wheel rake tines as another example. Today's implement's frequently failing in a relatively shorter time. Don't you think so? (fatique technically can be called as time dependent stress failure.)

Fatigue... maybe. But what caused the fatigue? Improper heat treat of the tines? such as de-carb, quench crack, lap in the steel, etc...or possibly repeated stresses having a maximum value less than the tensile strength of the material...such as rototilling a large rock /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Don't know what's causing the fatigue in your case, but some things that are overlooked: Radius of the sprung area should be large. Tool marks, thin areas, and poor matallurgy can contribute.

I used to get good music wire that could be annealed, formed, and re-quenched. Now it seems you can't get music wire that's workable. I think metallurgy isn't what it used to be.

Some people just ask to much of that type of tooth. We were selling a lot of them on cultipackers and found them not to be giving the penetration of the older C type. We also were plagued with breakage in some areas. Today we don't use them in as many types of uses as we used to and have gone back to what we thought wasn't good enough to begin with.
