I'm surprised that with seemingly every area of the country getting bombed lately, we are high and dry in New England. I'd love a white Christmas........ but its not looking too promising.

I hate this stuff - I have relatives out your way and a nephew in his last year of HS in Fauquier. I'm about 35 minutes away out near Sperryville. Expected 1-3 inches so not much but weather folks said our area is the winner (since I hate winter, I think not) because we ended up with slightly over 5 inches. With this horrible cold, they've just cancelled schools tomorrow in our area because it's expected to freeze over and be ice when the buses would be out picking up kids in the morning. Stay warm!

Yep, that's Fauquier, the school board will close schools when it snows west of Blue Ridge.

I live just a few miles southwest of Roanoke, but work in the Roanoke Valley. VDOT seemed to be a little slow getting the blade down on the pavement again.

we ended up with mostly sleet and freezing rain from this one. walking around out there is very crunchy and very slippery in some spots. i like that VDOT pretreats the pavement when there's frozen precip in the forecast. back in the blizzard of '93 (storm of the century) VDOT took 3 days to get to our road.

Here in blizzards or lots of snow, VDOT does the "town" portion of the county, all the main thoroughfares and roadways and contract with local farmers to do all the back country roads using their large tractors/blades. Last year we were able to get out easily by early the second day. Not that anything opened if you could get out though.

Regarding ice/sleet/freezing rain, a few years back I bought YakTrax Walkers in a local shop. Our driveway stayed a solid sheet of ice for at least a week last year and I used them to walk down to get the mail -they work fantastic in truly slick stuff. They don't work at all in the type snow you sink into or the fluffy stuff. You still have to be careful walking but it takes away that tentative feeling you get when walking over the truly slick stuff. I keep a pair in my glove compartment.
