Favorite breed of horse?

I love the look of a paint, I feel the same about big giant drafts also...

But I'm DEEP in what TexasJohn said "...then you get to do fencing, water, build shed and cover, get tack, build tack shed, get horse trailer, get vehicle to pull trailer, change insurance, build more sheds, buy feed, buy hay, build more sheds, start rodent control program, visit vet regularly, then you can't leave home because need to feed and water horse, buy inclement weather clothing so you can take care of horse in any weather, purchase fly and parasite control supplies, visit doctor because you got bit, kicked or fell off...there's more..."

So my opinion is UNQUALIFIED! :laughing:

I sure am tired of being a rookie greenhorn though... But at the moment I love them, and I claim that I LIKE building fences etc...

I have 4 quarter horses and an appaloosa mix which is the one on my logo. My quarter horses have the best temperament but my app is a much smarter horse and has always had the attitude that he is the boss. Smarter doesn't necessarily mean better. He can figure out how to open gates, get over, under or through fences, remove a saddle or blanket or unseat a rider if he desires. Only a crazy person would own a horse like that but you have to be a little crazy to own a horse anyway.:confused2:

Like this maybe - at least my female mini is a "whatever" girl... Both the girl - "Peaches", and the boy "Trouble" kinda match their names.

cute mini.. mine is a lil paint, class a, just barely. if I trim his hooves he makes 36" he's a lil uppity character.. tries to boss the quarters around..

In the U.S., the Quarter Horse has led in popularity based on sheer numbers for many years. Probably way before I was around. From personal experience, I can share reasons for their appeal from the standpoint of usability...As a whole, they have a tolerant, forgiving temperament, and stay cool, yet responsive under pressure. Comes in handy when you have a nasty bovine on the end of yer rope. We've bred the "fight or flight" instinct out of them juuuust enough in my opinion. Can't have 'em too dead and gentle or you'll just end up with a horse that'll get you hurt because they don't respond to cues quickly when you're in a jam. I don't think ther'll ever be a better breed for handling cattle where you have to quietly ease through a herd one minute, then bust out and turn back a bunch-quitter the next. That being said, (this is just my personal opinion) show QHs have become too specialized. But that's a whole 'nuther thread.

My opinion of the most user-friendly breed is Tennessee Walking Horse. Very predictable, willing, and kind. They work really well for recreational riders. Their smooth gait allows older folks with back problems and other problems to enjoy riding.

My choice would be Missouri Foxtrotters. I've had two of them, very smoothe ride. They're gaited and very gentle. They come in all colours.
