Cover it with black plastic instead; that will solarize the soil and keep the weeds from growing. Or you might consider a cover crop, which would also help choke the weeds out while building up the soil.

Thanks for the advice. I tried some black plastic before but the wind storms made off with it. I even tried putting large rocks all over it but the winds get under the edges and tear it up. Maybe there is a better way to hold it in place and I am open to any ideas.

I'd love to have some guinea fowl but so would the coyotes.

If you home them properly, they lock up at night just like chickens. We have 19 that go to bed, unless broody. We also still have beetles. Lol

Cover the edges with soil or compost. Go all of the way around it so that there are no edges exposed. You will be amazed how hot it is if you put your hand under the plastic on a sunny day.

I took two off the peak of my roof with one shot from my .22 pistol. Nobody was there to see it though, so I guess it really didn't happen. My dog sure got a kick out if it though.

The small battery tiller is really helping out this year.

I watched my mom shoot two pheasants with one shot once, they obviously lined up as she pulled the trigger on the 20 guage. So I know it can be done.

Fed up with the garden? well last year was a nothing overall, very disappointed with production of peas, beans and potatoes. But our Strawberries did good.
This year has been one of those bounty years. Evidently my wife planted at the right time, got the right amount of manure and compost on everything last year or the stars and planets are all lining up for that magnetic pulling of the sprouts through the soil cover!
Just never know what the weather is going to give us, but we keep on trying just like real farmers. With the attitude that maybe it will get better this year.

This year we decided to use grow bags for tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, green beans, some strawberries, bell peppers and some herbs. Setup a drip system things are looking good considering a late start typical northwest spring!

Can't understand the cantaloupe and watermelons they've been in a month and a half. They're green and healthy looking. Maybe 7-8 inches across and no sign they're going to grow. ???????????
Down the road they put in watermelons couple weeks after me and theirs have spread out with 2-3 foot shoots in all directions and blooms like crazy.
Even some baby fruits (not that I'm judging LOL)
