Federal Judge Dismisses Suit Against 'Drone Slayer'

Good point. The biggest difference would be you can tell if he's taking pics or not. With a drone "everyone" automatically believes it is.

Even if he's not taking pictures that's creepy behavior. I'm in the "everyone" group concerning drones and cameras so if it is "knowingly" intruding on our privacy, it has a good chance of getting a 10 gauge shooting at it.

The answer is there is no difference, unless the law gives special rights and privileges to the drone operator; and in my opinion they shouldn't. Not only that, but if you use your drone to violate either the law or my right of privacy, you should be prepared to forfeit your drone.

That's good to know. I have no idea what laws are in place here in Wyoming. Forfeiting a drone by way of a 10 gauge is probably frowned upon one would assume...

I'm a drone plot and seeing posts like this really are upsetting (maybe not for what you'd think)

Most drones have fisheye cameras on them that would require then to be nearly humping your leg to get a decent photo of you.

The drones that can carry actual cameras cost thousands of dollars. No one that spends that much money on a drone plus thousands of dollars on a camera and lens that can take pictures of you from a far truly cares Wtf you are doing.

If someone wanted a picture of you a flying noise maker is a little obvious, don't you think?

The thing that really gets me though is that people seem to be so upset about these incapable drones invading their privacy (even willing to get their firearms out for a cause they believe in) when almost everything you type online and every website you go to is tracked and more. Something that violates your privacy on a multiple factor level compared to these toys and yet there aren't any firearms calling for net neutrality.

Off my soapbox now, but seriously, fight the fights that matter. If the drone is flying at ground level at your windows, by all means shoot the thing down and beat the snot out of the pilot.

Yes, but most of us have experienced drones flying very close by. So that point isn't all that valid. And there is no way for the average citizen to know what any given drone is carrying.

The drones that can carry actual cameras cost thousands of dollars. No one that spends that much money on a drone plus thousands of dollars on a camera and lens that can take pictures of you from a far truly cares Wtf you are doing.

How much someone spends on a drone is no indication of whether they are creepy or sinister or of their intentions. I cannot imagine why my neighbor hovers his multi-thousand dollar drone with his multi-thousand dollar camera pointing into my back yard for 5-10 minutes at a time. As mentioned, it really doesn't bother me anymore than the same neighbor sitting in his own tree looking into my backyard. It is probably perfectly legal, even if he is taking picture but that does not mean it is unreasonable to feel a little suspicious and annoyed.

The thing that really gets me though is that people seem to be so upset about these incapable drones invading their privacy (even willing to get their firearms out for a cause they believe in) when almost everything you type online and every website you go to is tracked and more.

Not a valid analogy at all. When I use the internet I am the one putting my data out there understanding all risks and caveats. A drone flying over my property and taking pictures has nothing to do with what I chose to make public.

Off my soapbox now, but seriously, fight the fights that matter.

That is the whole point of this discussion. Folks are trying to find out what is okay and what isn't. Its a brave new world.

And the thing is that our privacy is and has been under full assault the last 20 years. From every aspect of our lives. So it shouldn't be any wonder that people are touchy about it. We all should be.

Maybe something under the "expectation of privacy" laws of your state.

What Is the "Reasonable Expectation of Privacy"?

Bruce

That is the topic of the decade. Make no mistake that those who have the power and the money will _always_ fight to deny your rights of privacy. It is new territory and it has to be resolved. I believe privacy rights are fairly narrow. The problem is, even those narrow rights are under assault.

Does this apply to news drones? How about drones used to video a municipality? How about Gmaps?

See how complicated this gets?? No argument, just raising points. :)

I agree. I never hover over anyone's property unless given permission.

When I read posts like this I always cuss myself outloud for not saying this rather than being a "Nancy" and sugar coating everything. Good post. :)

Personally, I'm concerned about the "slippery slope" - 15 years ago, webcams were complete crap and could barely tell you who someone was at your door. Today, you can get 4k GoPros.

I don't care what your drone can do today; I'm going to assume that it's got perfect vision like a human, and if it's on my property looking towards me, I'm going to assume that it can see really well. It's not my job to determine if it's got a nice camera or not - it shouldn't be invading my privacy.
