Anyone know how my brother could arrange for a FEL for his '49 TO20? Curious, I guess....

He could build one or he could buy one. Buying might be tough as finding one would likely be a problem. But it might be fun looking. Not having power steering is a bit cumbersome, but there were many TO's and 9N, and 8N's that had manure buckets on them, as well as snow buckets. You just have to steer when moving, as its impossible to turn the wheels otherwise. Some had cables that would operate off the 3pt arms to lift the FEL. Some had one-way rams that would lift by tapping into the hydraulics for pressure, and tying the 3pt arms down in a fixed position.

It would be expensive to find a new one if such a thing is still being made, but there are a bunch of used out there. The cheaper ones are laying in a pile, never sure if you get all the parts. Can be a good deal if you are handy with a welder tho.

Building your own, or adapting Cadplans or the like to fit is always an option.

A front-mount hyd pump is often the best bet for powering them, often part of the loader package.

The good news - You can pick up a trip-loader at most auctions very cheap… ~~$50- couple hundred dollars… complete!

The bad news – the TO20 and most older tractors weren’t designed for real loader usage with 1) very weak front axles and spindles, 2) no hydraulic horsepower to properly run externally hydraulic devices (most ~ 4 ½ gpm & < 1500-1900 psi)

Now, with that said, if used properly, the trip-loader can be very useful if you realize all the limitations… excellent for brush hogging purposes & giant portable wheel barrel type carry of loads…

(a picture of my MF135 with very similar front-end and trip-loader)

Used is your best bet, but if you want new they are still availibe, i checked my Kelley loader catalog and they still make a loader for your tractor. But it would be pretty expensive.

Actually the front axle's of the N's and fergies were very robust.. very nice thick overlaping cast plates... Spindles are of course the weak link.

Right on there.. I can't speak for the fergies.. but the N's.. a close relative, develops a massive 2.9 gpm flow rate.... nice huh..

Way back in the fifties, WAGNER built a nice loader for the Henrys and Harrys (Ferds and Fergies /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif). The Wagners all had nice hydraulic buckets, and they would load cow crap like mad all day long. The Wagner loaders made it tough to get on and off the tractor as they did not have the step-through design. Later, the DAVIS company made a super loader for the Henrys and Harrys which incorporated the step-through design and was superb in every way. If you do this thing.....do yourself a favor and install a front end pump. It isn't the horror that everyone thinks it is to set one up, and it pays you back every time your former nicotine-stained fingers reach for that control valve to dump the bucket while holding the master clutch down. The loader shown above is an absolute masterpiece of "minimum" design. You should be able to pop one of those together over the weekend. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I've never seen a (removed) or a Fergie break a front spindle. We usually cut the wheels and welded 6.00 X 16 rims on them and used automobile tires in front with the loader tractors. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
