I prefer to think of it as rural ingenuity.:)

Redneck would be hunting coyote out of a raised bucket.

Or the back of a pickup using the cab for a gun rest while hauling butt across a winter corn field....... :D

I take it you have never done that? I won't say that i have either!

The leak down is most often caused by fluid leaking past the internal seal in the cylinder. Weight forces the fluid behind the seal, to seep past the seal, from the higher pressure side, to the lower pressure side, and the FEL drops.

Since it's an internal seal, nothing you do externally, like wiping oil on the ram, will make much difference. The internal seal(s) never run on the shaft. They are located on the end of the shaft, and run on the internal bore of the cylinder.

If the cylinders are well made, they have tight tolerances, and good seals. But, those cylinders are expensive.

If they are not well made, they do not hold for long periods of time, especially after they start to wear.

If the leak down gets too fast, it's really not big deal to pull the shaft, and replace the seals.

I'm kinda surprised there is no written specs on this.
If you have a tractor, under warranty, where is the line in the sand that says the dealer will repair vs nah it's fine all tractors do that to a ceetain degree there buddy...?

I'm sure they have one. Probably not clearly stated in the owner's manual though!!!! :)

Kinda like buying a new vehicle and suffering excessive engine oil consumption. There's a line drawn by the manufacturer but it's wayyyyyy beyond what you and I would consider acceptable. :(

The rod side of the piston, initially the low pressure side, becomes the high pressure side if fluid is getting past the piston seals, as I'm sure you know. I'm wondering if, in some cases, this high pressure then starts bleeding through the valve since it's only metal on metal between the spool and valve body.

My '83 IH584 will stay up 3 weeks.
My NH TN95A will stay up 8 hours.
My NH TC33D will stay up 2 days.

This guy, who is on this site, has a spec for the cylinders he has- 1/4" per hour. Obviously a different application but same concept.

To figure out where the leak was happening you would need to isolate the cylinders and see what amount of drift you were getting.
