Well to those people who helped answer my question about size loader on a jd 790. Mr. dumb a-- used loader for first time loaded bucket attempted to back out lost rear traction and you guessed it destroyed both sides final drive on front axle. I blame myself i know better. Now i have to figure out how to repair my mistakes. Lesson learned the hard way.

I promise it will be expensive, very expensive. I move double 5x5 rounds with my M9 in the field all the time (with another on the back spear bit i's never in FWA. Unless you have above average mechanical skills and the specialized tools to take it apart and put it back together, Think I'd leave that to an authorized JD dealer

I do dirt work as well and again, never in FW Assist. About the only thing I use FWA for is drawbar pulling something heavy like pulling a stump.

Besides FWA eats up tires as well. Just put new shoes on one of my M's. 4 radial R1's mounted here at the farm was 5 grand.

As 5030 said - unless you have above average skill and the required tools - it's going to be a trip to your JD dealership.

I've never used 4WD with the loader or, now, my grapple. I use 4WD when blading snow or to traverse my moat in the spring time.

maybe someone can explain why 4x4 with the loader is bad if the ground is soft/slippery, i used 4x4 constantly with snow piles?

That must be a big tractor thing. Most compact tractor owners use the 4x4 exclusively and failures are rare.

This is sparking my interest too. My land is very hilly, and working a lot of dirt on the hill, I am using 4WD all the time, probably 80% of the time the tractor is moving. My average slope is 10%, and it goes up to over 25--I stay off that part unless going absolutely straight up or back. Last night was this 22 ton load of dirt down to the backyard. So is using 4WD on dirt going to cause me problems ?

Is a John Deere front end really that weak? I’ve had my New Holland boomer 30 almost 9 years now and it spends almost all its loader time in 4wd.

If one dig into a pile destroys the front end, then I’m really glad the John Deere dealer I went to when I bought my cut wouldn’t give me the time of day and I went else where.

I’ve taken my front end apart to replace oil seals, and other than really big sockets it didn’t take much specialized tools. Granted I didn’t have to set lash and offsets for a new set of gears.

I guess it's because my Kubota M6040 is pretty heavy - 10,100 pounds. And probably because it has R-1 tires. I've never needed/used 4WD when using my bucket or grapple. I have all the necessary traction in 2WD. And I do not run in 4WD simply because the tractor has that option.

There are times when plowing snow or doing major driveway modifications that I need/use 4WD. Otherwise - I plow my yard, mile long gravel driveway and mailbox area in 2WD.

My Branson 8050 is 10,000# it's in 4wd quite a bit, almost all the time when plowing snow.
On the farm the NH 6050 and the CIH Puma are the primary loader tractors and use 4wd much of the time.
