FEL or 3PTh to lift?

( I differentiate between lifts and pulls. If I am lifting evenly a FEL load, the hydraulics will cut out if it is too heavy. I occasionally do a "light lift" using chains on only one side of my FEL...)

Your talking about overtorquing your FEL frame here. I have a hook right in the middle on the top edge of my bucket - last week I lifted up a big pine log that (according to internet published densities)weighed somewhere between 1500-2000 pounds. I had my doubts that my FEL could lift it, but it went up effortlessly. I have a HD bucket - I think a normal weight one might bend lifting with a center hook. OTOH, when I tried to tip up the end of that big rock last week, my FEL didn't budge - just hissed at me /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have something a little different than you do? Case 1845C, and I can lift 3500 pounds with the arms! And I can lift 5000 pounds with bucket curl? food for thought
weights are close and approximate

I have a 21-hp B7510HST with the LA302 FEL.
I generally go by engine sound. If the engine is lugging, I stop and back out.

For example, right now I'm using the BB and FEL to excavate a 6" deep area for a 20'x20' paver block patio. With the rippers full down and the box loaded with dirt, I can stall the tractor if I'm not careful with the 3pt position control.

Same with the FEL. When the toothbar digs in too far, the engine lugs, telling me it's time to reduce the bite by curling the bucket upward and maybe lifting a little.

There are several things to keep in mind here. One is that the oil heats up when it is going over relief because you are forcing the oil through a smaller outlet at high pressure. Doing this can melt your seals in your valves and cylinders and cause considerable damage. People often run into this problem when running backhoes as well, but that is usually because the tank does not hold enough oil to allow it to run at cooler temps.
Also, the relief on your loader valve is only going to operate when the spool open. If there is no oil going through the valve spools there is none to send over relief. I say this because if you lift all you can get the loader to move and take off and hit a giant pot hole at 10 MPH... the relief will not function. Your loader is going to take all the shock in the frame and cylinders. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
