First I would like to thank all who have posted their FEL snow plow projects. They have been an excellent source of information and ideas, as well as inspiration to start my project. I hope that this post will also add to the knowledge and idea base.
The goal of my build will be to fabricate an attachment to my Ford 1920's FEL arms which will easily accomodate a snow plow, forks, and various trailer hitches. I would like to minimize the distance that the plow extends from the tractor as well as minimize the weight of the attachment and plow. I will do all of the work and the budget is $650.
After patiently following Craigslist, I found a 7 1/2 foot Western plow. I was hoping to get either a 6 1/2 or 7 foot plow. The seller advertised this plow as 7 foot but when I measured it, it was 7 1/2 foot. After driving over one hour and not knowing when or what else I would find, I bought the 7 1/2 footer. I also purchased forks and fork blades from an internet seller. Hope you enjoy!

Ray

Looks like you are off to a great start

Keep us posted, The plow can be shortened in length if needed. I cut a 7.5 western down to a 6.5 for my 32 hp JD.

craigslist is really a roll of the dice, sometimes you win and sometimes you loose. My latest purchase, a plow, i think was a pretty good deal, but 2 weeks prior to that I drove two hours each way for a small quad for my son which turned out to be a p.o.s. and I had to walk away empty handed.

JB, how many wheels did u go through cutting that plow down. I'll probably end up cutting down the plow I just got from 7.5 to either 6.5 or 6. hoping to get it all welded up next weekend.

I had a similar experience with a Marathon Hot water heater off of craigslist. I wanted for a heat storage tank for my infloor heat.......another story. But the guy assured me it was new, never hooked up. I get there after driving 2 hours and it is a 10 year old model with marks from pipe wrenches all over the conections........unbelieveable.

Ray,

Good Luck buddy. I just finished mine an hour ago and hope to get my thread updated soon with the pics. I thought I would save myself the sandblasting and painting so I took it to a powdercoater...........He did such a S*&^ job I either have to drive an hour and half to take it back to him or repaint over the powder coat myself. No body cares about your project like you do.

Try this guy: SCPC He has done a great job for me. In addition to the sandblasting he applies an epoxy primer that is fused with the powdercoat for a very durable finish.

Maybe just a couple, I don't remember exactly. I used a torch to cut the welds so I could reuse the end pcs.

I've been using wheel saws now for most of my cutting, from that 12 inch saw down to 4 inch, with a couple in between. Much better than using the torch all those years. Don't know why I didn't discover the wheels earlier, I always had the saws and grinders. Been buying some wheels from HF, cheap and they seem to last even longer than the brand name ones.

Thanks, JB. I plan to plow with it this winter and only prime bare metal before I use it. I figured that I could shorten it later if my tractor had trouble with the length. Like your saw.

I agree. Bought my lathe last year. Seller sent excellent pictures and accurately described it. Drove 3 1/2 hours for this one. That's life in the UP of Michigan. I messed up with this purchase when I told the seller that I would have to drive on hour and wanted pictures. Pictures were not clear. Lots of welding and additions to A frame that I did not pick up on. Spent first day grinding and grinding, and cutting trying to clean up the A frame and remove it from the rest of the plow. Went through a bunch of grinding and cutting discs and sawsall blades. Looking foward to read more about your project!
