Can anyone recommend a place to by fence post caps for the top of 4" x 4" posts? I'd like to put them (plastic/vinyl) on the top of the posts to shed water.

I was at Lowe's today and, on a cart I saw being pushed down an aisle, I saw some copper caps for 4" x4" posts. I would check with them, if they have the copper I would think they have the cheaper plastic.

Just curious here. If you are using wooden posts why put a cap on them? The post will rot out at the bottom long before any damage is done from water on the top. If it is just an appearance thing, I can understand it.

I was thinking that caps would prevent the PT posts from rotting from the top.

Mike,

How many posts do you have that you want to cap?

If you don't have too many to do, why not just take a circular saw, or if they're out in the field and you don't have a generator in your FEL, a chainsaw, and just cut an angle at the top of the post? A simple 45 degree cut would be sufficient to let the water run off.

Just an idea. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As someone else suggested, the posts will rot at the bottom or ground level before rotting from the top. Makes sense to me. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif BTW, I have 187 posts.

Those caps are expensive little boogers... From $2-$5 a pop... 187 at $2 each is $374. Maybe I'm cheap, but that's a lot of money!

The plastic caps at Lowes were $1.16 each. Glad I wont be buying any. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have seen a lot of fences where they used flashing to cover the tops of the posts. It's kind of ugly but I imagine it's cheaper.
