How many miles are you fencing? If under a mile probably cheaper to rent. Where are u located?

My neighbor bought one when he got his tractor. Works great but it's a lot of money. Like the other poster said, unless you're doing a lot of fence, and doing it over and over, it makes more sense to rent or borrow. Or at least buy used.

I am looking at putting a bunch of T posts in soon and plan to use the bucket on the FEL to do the job.
Any particular method to doing this so that no one gets hurt and the tractor is not damaged?

My neighbor used a pipe large enough for the t post to slide through and cut 2 feet shorter than the t post so all posts would be 2 feet deep. also helps them go in straight.

Just finished setting 250each 6.5 ft T- post my self. using my FLE to do the hard work of getting the post into the ground. I got a piece of pipe(cut to the hieght of fence desired) that would slip over the top of the T-post, another poster here had the same idea. welded a piece of plate over one end to push against and added a flange(ground stop) to the other end. Once you get your fence line laid out, position the tractor straddling the line and start setting post. I did this with extra help. one person on the tractor, the other on the ground setting the post in place to be pushed into the ground. to do this the person on the ground starts the post by using the pipe as a driver to start the post in the ground. Once it will stand up on it's own move over it with the loader (bucket is level and post is close to the center line of the bucket) and slowly lower the bucket pushing the post in the ground until the pipe stops the ground penertration. lift the bucket and back the tractor up to do the next one in line. The post all end up being the same hieght out of the ground. My soil here is sandy loam with some clay, If I had to guess I would say it took about 2 minutes per post to set once we got the rythm going. Hope this helps you,

I personally would use a tph attachment rather than the fel. I think you would have much better depth control. Something like a 1200 lb concrete weight, with a pipe cap attached to the back. I have never done it that way, though. We always used a sledge hammer.

edit Just reread bassin20. That is just as good. I should read before I type!

I put in around 500 poles last year using a Shaver post pounder that I bought new. I wanted to get something that was used but they are very hard to find and when you do they go fast. I agree with the other comments that if you do not have a lot of poles to do just rent or contract out. They are expensive at around $2,500 dollars new for the smaller HD-8 model and go up from there. Where are you located?

I seen this posted a couple weeks ago, don't know if it will help anyone.

But a guy made a T-post driver.

It is in Build-it yourself (on page 4) T-post driver.

I like the pneumatic pounder my wife bought me for around $400...I put all the t-posts in the bucket, air compressor & gen on the carryall..posts go in regardless of the ground or if they hit a rock. sure is a savings on my bad shoulders.

Thanks for the info. This sounds like it would be efficient and quick.
