Fence Rail Splitter

   / Fence Rail Splitter #11
My current thought is a 6-8" channel laying on the web, thus using the flanges as an anti-roll feature, mount a 2 way cylinder to push into a 4 way splitting head,...
Your channel will have to be welded to the top flange of an I-beam or something of similar stiffness. By itself it is way too flexible. Most log splitters use the top flange of the I-beam as a linear guide for the pusher. Having the channel there will make that a little harder.

The horizontal wedge of the 4-way might benefit if it is height-adjustable and removable. Some high-end splitters have that feature.

If the wedge is also on a linear guide that is pinned to the beam, you can pull the pin to ratchet the process if needed. I don't like the idea of using log spacers or splitting multiple firewood chunks because the stack could buckle explosively.

Even if running off a remote valve you will want to leave that valve actuated and add a splitter valve where you are working. The Prince 3060 regenerative valve can save lots of time. http://www.baileynet.com/product/9194

Thx's for the input Brad - yup could be creating more problems than I solve with channel only. I'm warming up to the concept shown in a French manufacturer you tube video. Also agree the adjustable splitting head is a must. ENC mentioned earlier about cables and winch, I might rethink along those lines using a concept in the video address below.

Appreciate your thoughts
Mike
