fencing for Horses and goats???

Hmmm this makes a big difference in my thinking then. So I should look at running either 4 or 5 lines of the smooth wire electrify the Top wire and also run the nylon mesh for sight???? Renze, could you post a pic of your setup?

Wade,

I dont have the goats anymore, and the wires are gone. I can make you a pic of the horse fence but the goat fence is gone.

I'm talking electrifying ALL the wires AND the 1.5 to 2 inch wide nylon ribbon, or either the goats or the horses will stick their heads through and reach into the neighboring field untill the wires snap.... ;)

Don't forget Ramm fence as an option. I am in no way affiliated with them, but I did install 1300 ft of Ramm Fence this spring and it went up easy and provide a good horse-safe fence (I have a buired post that has a few pictures).

And mixig goats and horses...yes they are good companions but occasionally goats will nibble on horse tails.

The electric fence part of our fencing is all Ramm. Charger, tape, connectors, and post mounts are all Ramm. I have been working with electric fence for about thirty years now. We went to the Ramm electric fence set up two years ago. It's the only way to go. It's a bit expensive up front but the quality of this system is well worth the price. So much easier to maintain than off the shelf electric fence systems.

I will be fencing in a new pasture for horses as soon as I get the shelter built.
I will be using 'white lightning" by Centar White Lightning electric horse fence wire is coated far additional safety. for the top electric wire and "polyplus" for the middle wire. Those two wires provide good visability and keep the horses from leaning on the fence. Between them I run single 12.5 guage high tensel steel lines. Using 4"x8' treated posts and 6" treated posts for the corners. Makes for a real nice looking fence but its expnsive going this route. Since this fence will be close to the house I spent the extra money to enhance the looks of the property.

I see you are in my area. I'm just wondering what vendor you're using to get the White Lightning products. I have been researching fencing for the last year and have finally decided on the same the White lightning for the top wire and the Plus for other. (might also do alternating). Best option to the vinyl rail, which is way to expensive for 30+ acres at this time.

I see that K fence advertising as selling it, but I can't figure out if they are open on the weekends at all.

Check out electrobraid fencing.. i've used it for 10 years......no injuries, no breakouts, no maintenance. When a tree falls on it I take the tree off and it springs back good as new.

I like to keep my horses clean of parasites. I think that would be hard to do if they were kept with goats.

We are using the solar electric panels here with just 20 volts power in it. As it is densely populated here, using more power is bery dangerous one. So, we are using small power component to protect the goats.

Horses and Goats are good companions i have both. My paddock (1 acre) is surrounded by field fence and a electric ribbon around the inside top. Started out with solar power for fence charger but after replacing it twice before either was a year old I swiched to a higher powered charger that works off household power. I should have run an extra hot wire lower to the ground for the goat. He used to stick his head through to get outside vegations (roundup cured that), but now he uses the fence for scratching and the fence is bowed to the outside all the way around.

When the goat was younger I had to remove his head from the fence several times because his horns would get hung up. One day I heard him bellowing and when I went to investagate I saw him with his head stuck through the field fence and the horse had a grip on his back, with his teeth, trying to pull the goat out of the fence. The horse had all four of the goats legs off the ground. Don't know if the goat was bellowing because of being stuck or because the horse was trying to unstick him. You know, come to think about it, I don't think the goat ever stuck his head through the fence again.

Oh yeah, the field fence helps keep stray dogs out. Two dogs, one belonging to my non responsible nieghbor that was asked to keep control of his dogs, have crawed under the gate to chase either the horse or goat. My horse hates dogs and doesn't run from them but attacks them instead. Twice I have pulled dead dogs out of the horses area.

Here is something that is cheaper and easier to install if you decide to go with the electric fence route. I installed this post system and believe me it was easy to install and customize to my pasture area.

I was at tractor Supply yesterday looking at fencing. the prices and choices make a big difference. What can I use and can I not use. I saw that the general purpose livestock fence has verry big squares and a hoof could get stuck in them. however the horse climbing fence has the smaller squares but is also $280 for just 200'!!!!! the Goat and sheep fencing is around $200 for 330' and the welded wire is about $150 for 330' What are you guys using??? barbed wire is not an option. the wife will not agree with it and horses.

thanks
Wade

Wade, just put in 2 large paddocks for our Horses.

Posts are Peeled Cedar, round posts (vary from 6" to 10" diamiter)

We ran 3 strands of Smooth High Tensile wire.

top 2 are electrified

the High tesnsile is very very strong stuff, bit of a pain to work with because its so stiff, but it works well.

Cost for the High Tensile was $125 (CAD) for 4,000 feet plus the cost of the insulators and tensioners (another ~$150 or so). The Energizer for the fence was about $300.

I borrowed a Spool/Reel fromthe fence supplier, made unrolling the High Tensile wire easy (dont try it without one).

I have regular field fence with big squares around my pasture but the other side of the fence is woods. I let woods grow up for about 10' on my side of the fence and the horses never get close to the fence to get hung up.

If I had to keep my fenceline cut and if there was clearing on the other side I would probably add a hotwire.

If the grass is greener on the other side, you have to worry about your horses getting hung in field fence.
