Field Jacks and Traction Boards

Glenn, would this 'jack' be of any value to your oozama site?

The one being slung out got stuck in a rice paddy when it ran out of av-gas. they had to strip it down first.

Glenmac:
If you use a jackmate or jackall as I know them Be very sure you have a good solid footing for it. A piece of 3/4" plywood or 2x10 plank as they have a habit of slipping. Also be very carefull around the handle and keep your head well out of line with it. That also has a nasty habit of releasing unexpectedly and does hurt when it hits you.
As for matting spruce boughs work very well but the easiest is to just stay out of the bog.
A final note. The jackalls are a very handy tool but they have their quirks and can hurt the unvary!

Glenn, there is one more technique with the high-lift jack I remember using in my earlier 4X4 days. I'll warn you though, this is not for the faint-of-heart and will never make the "tractor safety" forum...

Raise one end of the offending vehicle with the high-lift. Raise as high as you dare, certainly higher than the ruts are deep. Once up, push sideways and the whole thing will settle with a thud on fresh earth. Ditto the other end of the vehicle and with any luck, you can ease it out.

I'd skip the boards and such. Get a high-lift and some sort of manual or electric winch. It'll be much quicker and a lot less messy than boards.

Doesn't sound like you had fun.

I have boggy corner on my property and came close to the same problem a few times myself with my MMM (my only optino;l don't have a rear mount) - I managed avoid getting stuck by making sure I was going downhill and was at top speed, so sheer momentum would be on my side.

I have the hi-lift jack - bought it probably ten years ago. Only have used it once - to jack up the tractor to take the back wheel off. Lifted the tractor fine. It's a heavy jack, but not too heavy to carry 500' if necessary.

When I jacked my tractor up, the only stable spot I could find was the FEL frame on the side. What spots did you end up using at the jack point on the front and back?

I suppose that, on the front, I could somehow use the grill guard, but I don't think that would be the best spot.

For boards underneath the tires, if you "roughed" up one side by puttinh cuts or something into it, that may work.

www.warn.com has an excellent guide to winching a stuck vehicle. It is in PDF format and requires adobe acrobat reader.

www.ramsey.com has many electric and hydraulic winches.

I would go with a hydraulic winch on a tractor over an electric one. I think the electric ones are for occasional use, IE.. you're stuck, while a hydraulic one could be used for day to day uses, such as logging. However, they do make electric ones with portable mounts that could be used on your 4x4, car or tractor, and that would be handy for alot of reasons.

How about the compressed air lifting bags that are used by fire departments and rescue workers? You could use an 12v compressor.

Some bags work with as low as 7.5 PSI and will lift 8000 pounds 24"

glennmac,

I don't have any advise for fear I might miss more of these great stories. You should write a book. How about "HMS Glennmac in Oozama Land".
Good job getting it out. Were you wearing a tie? At least you didn't loose your sense of humor. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I assume that Hi Lift is a brand name, we always called them "tractor jacks". Since you've beaten me to the punch with this suggestion, I'll just chime in with my agreement.

Another take on the multiple fence post as tie off, a friend had a "danford" boat anchor that was modified to limit the angle to about half designed angle, you planted it in the ground and hooked your winch line to it, it would dig in for a good bite and out you came. When you were out, you hooked up to the other end and pulled it out. Worked great and wasn't to heavy or bulky.
