Figuring gravel for driveway

As a general rule I will never order less than 15 ton of rock from the quarry. I usually use 1.5 crusher run to fill in and dress existing residential driveways. Long country driveways I have to measure and calculate using the 75ft/truck rule.
If I am to build a driveway from bare dirt I will dig a few inches or so to hard pack soil. Put down 2 trucks of screenings for a roadbed and one layer of 2" screened on top. If I have too much 2" I build a crown into the roadbed to hide the excess and give the property owner something to scrape off later and fill erosion that has occurred over the last few decades. Do it right the 1st time. Its hard to get too much rock and build too solid of a roadbed. Take your sweet time, get it wet and pack the crap out of it.

Boys, Boys, Boys,.........don't make me come down (or up) there!! While were on this topic, what your take on Geo-Tex fabric under stone drives or garage floor, base slabs??

Under gravel or stone driveways with a wet or poorly packed soil - great idea. Done on most all road construction now days. Under concrete, probably a little overkill but certainly wouldn't hurt and may hep prevent some settling if the base isn't really packed (which it should be). I'm also a big proponent of always putting poly under a concerete slab. Saw some contractors doing while pouring a 12 inch slab at an Anheuser Busch plant. They explained it helps prevent the moisture from leaching out of the mix which gives a harder cure. I did it on my house, basement floor, and garage floor. No cracks in any of them. Also cheap enough to do.

the pollly under a slab works two ways wet ground will make the mix to wet, rain/ mostire can also ruein a poor

The rule of thumb I follow is a yard of material will cover 100 sq feet, 3" deep.
