Fill me in on the turbochargers

/ Fill me in on the turbochargers #71
Been investigating tractors for years, eventually I'll take the plunge. Big question will be should i get a turbo. I guess, but not sure, that the turbos are a recent thing, so I probably won't find a used one. Do you have to buy a new tractor to get a turbo?

Fill me in on the advantages/ disadvantages of turbos, how long they have been out, etc. They a lot more expensive? Use a lot less fuel? More horsepower? I don't know anything about them, just that everyone wants one.

When I buy I plan to get a 30-35 hp diesel 4wd hydro or power shift with FEL, Gannon, maybe a 3 point snow thrower, for grading 5 hilly acres, grading 1/2 mile of road and clearing snow.

Thanks

You poor sole, by now your mind is muddled with a thousand reasons why or why not to buy.

Maybe your questions should be what machine is recommended to maintain 1/2 mile of road with steep terrain. TRY before you buy.
ANYBODY who owns a 30-40 hp. tractor with what you require will tell you it's not enough power especially if you plan on a hydro. You will NOT be happy.

I would get nothing smaller than 60 hp for what you are asking of it. 30 hp won't pull it's own weight up most hills let alone using a ground engaging implement.

Whatever tractor you decide, turbo or no turbo do the manufacturer's recommended maintenance and be happy.
I wouldn't buy another tractor without a turbo.

Good luck, Fred

Fred,

In my case I wanted to keep the weight and size reasonable so I could easily trailer the tractor without buying a heavier truck etc.

33 hp and a turbo (I live at 4880') with cab works well and clears snow with a front mount 63" blower, doesn't bog down and scampers up hills too :c)

I will be adding a turbo cool down timer, just so I can avoid sitting there for a couple of minutes twiddling my thumbs before I can shut it down.
