Oil & Fuel Filter System for used oil

/ Filter System for used oil #11
What are you going to use this oil for after filtering? I know you say hinges and go cart wheels buy again you could buy a few quarts a year of oil made for these purposes for under $10. This filter setup will cost you a arm and a leg to get the oil clean enough to use.

I have a mounting bracket and the Frantz Filter to mount to a plate. The oil pumps on our tractors are gear pump, I'm leaning in that direction.

I'm curious to what you would need a large quantity of highly filtered oil for. Seems like hinges only need a couple of drops a year. :)

I don't have any experience with the Frantz Filter system your talking about but I do have experience in filtration systems in general, mainly industrial applications. I guess my first question would be if it wouldn't just be easier to buy a filter cart. Everything is already there, filter elements, pumps, hoses, gauges, etc... Next would be to what ISO quality do you want it filtered? Is moisture or varnish removal a concern?

I wasn't aware that Franz was still in business. Back in '65 I personally witnessed what a triple-pack of Franz's did to a D343 Cat engine. All that was salvageable was the top ends and the block. Maybe Franz has improved on their design but they were notorious for plugging so solid you couldn't blast those toilet paper rolls out of the cannisters.
That said, with tier 3 & 4 emission standards coming down the pike, I doubt you will see many truckers and fleets mixing used oil into their fuel anymore. The cost to clean, filter, store it, and then blend it becomes cost prohibitive.

But what the hey, nobody is going to stop you from doing what you want to do...........until you get an emissions ticket.

Greetings Michael, Thanks for coming on. I don't need a large quantity. I do want to clean what I have. I was kidding about the hinge. I have some vehicles and engines I use here on the property that I would chose to lube with this oil. I wouldn't use it in my tractor or certain other engines. The filter cart is a great idea, that was one of the things I regret not bringing. I brought the valve grinder with the diamond to shape the stones, testers and tools of all kinds. I brought one of the wine presses, granash and barrels. I made sure I had tool and equipment that few have. But just as you let something slip through your fingers that you will always regret I left the cart and a thousand other things no one would miss.
Regarding the Frantz Filter I have used them since they came out. I have a number of them. They cannot be in line but can be installed parallel with any filter. I still have one on my 1950 moving van, 55A Michigan Wheel Loader, Jeep wagoneer and GMC Safari. Like a member said it will filter so finely that eventually nothing will pass through. This is exactly what I like about them. I accept that while removing water they also may remove additives. While lead mechanic at a cosmetic company I saw bulk filtration units sent to the bone yard without makeing a move to get one.
I do want to make a simple small batch filter. I will appreciate any help thinking this one out. Richard

Greetings Bob, I see you are a down hill skier. I moved to the mountains and became a ski instructor, I did work as a slot mechanic and deisel mechanic but later just skied for a living. My wifey is an instructor also and a Clinician Examiner for P.S.I.A. I met her in a first timer class, she was visiting from Australia and came for a lesson.
You are correct if put in line they will clog in time, if not watched closely, will starve the bearings. I don't plan that. Frantz has died his daughter still sells them. Others also sell frantz filters. I appreciate your interest. Richard

Don't worry about filtering out additives. Very little if any actually will be filtered out of most lubricating oils. A large portion of additives are actually dissolved into solution. Kind of like mixing sugar with water and pouring it through a paper towel. It passes through because the sugar is dissolved in the water.

Some concerns about using used engine oil in another engine is the depletion of additives. I would suggest after you filter a batch you should have a analysis run on it. Make sure it is within viscosity spec's, oxidation and nitration readings are ok, there is a sufficient TBN level and there is a sufficient amount of other additives. Another thing you are not going to be able to filter out is fuel, every engine no matter how well it runs will deposit some fuel in the oil, known as fuel dilution. I hate to rain on anyone's parade but what you want to do is basically rerefine the oil. That's going to be hard to do for a reasonable price.

If you still want to make a filtration system just keep in mind that you will be using a bypass filter. They are low flow filters designed to filter small amounts of oil very efficiently. You will have to design the pump system around this fact. You might end up burning up regular oil pumps because they are designed for a rather high flow. Installing a pressure bypass valve in the inlet line to the filter should take care of this. Other than possibly adding a flow restriction gauge to keep a eye on the saturation of the filter building it is just a matter of getting the parts together and a little fabrication work.

I saw,on another, forum a fellow made simple filtration system useing an airless paint pot his compressor supplied the air, I think he set it at 30lbs.
On that other forum people yelled in form the cheap seats get this test, do this, do that, it'll never work, don't do it. They are always out there.
At this point the paint pot is the best.
Unless someone unveils his creation, I'll wait for that.

I don't think people are saying do not do it Valley. The thing is I have 11 motors on my place. I change my car every 3,000 miles or about 4 times a year, my truck every 5,000 miles or 3 times a year, my tractor every 50 hours or 2 times a year, and everything else like boats and lawn mowers once a year. I buy quality oil like Rotella and Quaker State and it cost me less than $150 per year to do this. My cheapest engine that I maintain is my 13HP engine in my generator and if it were to blow up due to using old oil it would cost $400 to replace. Just does not seem worth the risk to me or 99% of the others out there.
