Of course, as I say that I am cussing Kubota for putting a tool box the size of a teacup on the L4330 I bought last year. Who can you trust!

Me too! I love my L4400 but would agree with you, the tool box is a joke. Rattles like a can of dried beans too. Gonna have to do something about that.

Back to the topic, would a spur gear set up be easier to work on than a planetary rig? I guess it would depend on where the problem was, but accessing the spur gear case on either side looks pretty easy.

I'm guessing not many of the older Ag tractors used Chain Finals. My 1950 Case DC and 1951 SC both have chain drive finals. Problem with Chain finals is when you break a chain in the field, the tractor gets fixed in the field (at least thats how the DC was setup). We broke the left side final on the DC back in 1977, and were unable to move the tractor. Towing could have damaged internal parts due to a 6 foot hunk of ANSI# 140 chain sitting in the bottom of the transaxle. We were able to remove the rear cover, fish out the chain, then tow the tractor back to the barn for re-assembly. As it was, only the connector link broke. The parts man at Case IH said he never saw anyone break a final drive chain, only connector links. Not your normal roller chain!
