Final questions before purchase

Hi Everyone, I am in the final stages of deciding between the x585 and x595. I have never owned a diesel before so I'll tell you what I think I know. They have more torque for doing things like mowing and snow blowing which is about all I do. I have a 425 and only a few times in 12" + snow have I needed more power. I'm leaning towards the x585 because of the fuel injection. Would I really notice that big of difference between the two? My other big decision is the mowers, I have a 54 mmw now and like it alot, Is there any downside in going to the 62? Final question, do you guys know of any dealer websites that post prices so I can apply some pressure to my local dealer. They always want full retail. I have considered the 2210 and 4010 but I think they have features that I will never use. Owners of the x5 line are you happy with the power of the 25hp gas engine? Is the traction with the 4WD and the HDAP tires good in snow and dirt?

Maybe I don't have all the direct answers to your questions, but have had the Deere 425, the 445, briefly a 455, and now the x485. All have had the 54" deck and I like the versatility of getting between my trees (even the 54" is sometimes a tight fit) and mow about 8 acres (which has been tough with the near 11" of rain last month).

I think the fuel injection is great over the 'choke' carb on the 425 (lazy I guess). I would like the fuel economy of the diesel over the gas, but didn't like the diesel fumes and smell (although it doesn't bother me with the Deere 4300, so go figure). I have always had the all-wheel-steer, and have not had any issue with traction and can't get the AWS in the 4wd. I won't be without the AWS as it shortens up mowing time greatly and is a very rugged design. I have to admit to never feeling I needed 4wd as I don't have a FEL and think that is the only time I would have a use for it. Only have the snow plow (54" blade), MC519 cart, mower deck, and soon to be a sweeper.

Don't get me wrong my 425 has great traction. Only about 5 times a year in deep snow on a steep grade snow blowing uphill do I have an issue. I would have never thought that it goes as well as it does. I think if I get the 4X4 this time it will be my last upgrade for a bunch of years. I'm glad you reminded me about the smell of the diesel, I forgot about that. Thanks

I live for the smell of diesel! It goes well with the smell of gardenias that's invading my back yard right now!
Sorry, I couldn't resist since I like diesel better than gas. John

bouquet, it is more economical to use.

It is all about money..Spend it now or spend it later..I went with a 2210 because I chose to spend it now...I dont need anything larger and could have gotten by with something smaller....Good luck on whatever you choose. I am sure you will be happy..

You should check out the Kubota BX1500 series. Probably about the same price or less, diesel, 4wd, 3 point hitch, and will be more versatile in the future. Also check the Deere 2210...you may think you do not need to do anything else, thats because your machine is not like these sub-compact tractors....night and day difference. Get the diesel.

I bought a used 455, predecesor to 595 & run it year around, it starts without a heater in -25 cold. Use it to mow & move trailers around farm. Also put 3 pt hitch on it & have a mobile work bench. A fill up will allow me to mow through a good chunk of the summer. 3 cyl is smoother than twins. Last point is off road diesel is $1.34 today. I deliberately switched to a diesel lawnmower to take advantage of the larger tractors fuel.

Look seriously at the 2210 before you buy. I just recently bought the 2210, even though it was more tractor than I thought I would want or need. When I priced the 485/585s out the 2210 was less expensive when you the about adding TPH and rear PTO. It mows great and I have been pulling large buckthorn trees out with the FEL or by pulling with a chain.
I wonder who I was kidding? More tractor than I needed. HA, turned out to be just what I needed.

I will just throw in the pro-gas side of the argument: i have both diesel and gas tractors, and for a lot of uses prefer gas. If this fellow already has and uses a 425, he is certainly comfortable with the capability of a garden tractor vs. a sub cut. While the 2210 is a cool rig, the larger foot print, rops (even if folded) and heavier weight make it less advantageous for mowing and work around the house. Also I find that doing flower garden work etc, I am starting and shutting off my gas deere all the time - little 1 minute hops around the property; I wouldnt do that to my diesel. Lastly, this winter I stored my diesel and snowblowed/plowed with a gas garden tractor, and it was easier. No 10minute warm up, just 3 cranks and it fires off...maybe 1 minute to get the oil moving before backing out of the garage (no cloud of smoke there either).

So both gas and diesel have their place. For residential mowing, even on a larger scale, I vote gas.
