I have a Deere gator XUV that I would like to turbo it and get it to around 40 dependable horsepower...or more.
Anybody have any helpful info where to start?
Need a properly sized turbo, and modify the pump.
It has a 854cc yanmar that high idles at 3400rpm i believe, and has 24.6 hp.
Thanks.

There are several who have turbo'ed various models here on the forum. If you search the Yanmar section with the word "turbo" you will find at least 3 threads where guys have turboed their Yanmars, that I can remember. Recently in this customization forum recently a guy turbo'ed a NH Ford. There also was recently a thread with a guy who made garden tractors for tractor pulls. he was getting huge amounts of power out of the small engines.

"Dependable" is going to be a key word. "Longevity" is another. I believe your goal would be attainable, but I am not sure that the result will be "dependable" or long lived. Temperatures are the critical factor, especially TIT. Secondly, will the drivetrain designed for 24-26 hp be up to the requirements of 40 hp?

There is a JD section also so maybe someone there has done what you want to do. I wish you luck and do keep us posted.

Here is a good place to hang out:

Don't use a turbo any bigger than a Mitsubishi TD02, make sure it's a twin scroll. Columbus Diesel Supply and Sheid's modify these pumps and injectors.

Here is a Yanmar 3 cyl just a bit bigger than yours:

There was a guy on ebay selling ready made kits for the Kubota RTV, more for high altitude use.

40 hp and having it live isn't too much of an issue. Common sense is the rule. We get over 100 hp out of a 1.12L but that's a different story.

Here is a link to a person that has put together a kit to turbocharge a Rhino small diesel he is using a similar IHI RHB3 turbo that I used on my Ford 1210.

Kubota Rhino Small Turbo RTV1100 Pieces Turbocharger - eBay (item 230379904336 end time Sep-25-09 20:18:14 PDT)

I nearly got 30hp when you do the math converting from PTO hp out of a factory rated 16hp tractor with this size turbo and small fuel pump adjustment. So the 40hp will be easy to get out of the 24hp Yanmar . A similar displacement turbocharged diesel engine from Briggs & Stratton/Daihatsu. Makes 34hp all day long in the surface prep equipment that I build.

Good luck with your project.

Jay

Why not just buy a Rhino, or a Ranger? You can get them with 800cc engines, and a CDI box makes them a rocket, and they have a warranty!

Well, I farm and use my gator for heavy work that so far, only the gator can handle. I challanged a Rhino to a pin to pin pull off and not only did I pull him backward, he had some big $ repairs to do after the abuse.
The gator is bullet proof as a worker, that is my main concern. If I could add some power, I could work hard and play as hard as the lightweights as well.
