Finally Getting My Shop

Your shop is coming along nicely, looking good.

My shop is of similar size, walls made with 2x4 construction, roof top cord 2x6. On the walls studs and floor perimeter and top sill plate added 2 inches of thickness to allow for 6 inch insulation.

Used Roxul insulation which will not sag, nicer than glass to work with.

Installed a 100 amp service in the shop.

Installed an overhead rail for a chain lift, the large sliding equipment door stays inside when fully opened, no shoveling snow to get the tractor out during the winter months.

I leave the large door open during the summer months to allow the barn swallows to nest.

Nice job with the sheetrock. Good to see you cut the sheetrock to fit the windows and doors. Looks like a pro hung it!!!

What does it take to add more electric capacity, i.e. 100 amp service? The garage has one 12 gauge line running from the house to the garage. It is hooked to a 20 amp circuit in the house's breaker panel. I found the wire going from the house to the garage as I was digging down 3 inches to add a stone walkway from the driveway to the chicken coop! Skimmed the wire removing the grass making the walkway. Glad the previous owner / builder passed inspections!

It would not be a ton of work to find the wire again, dig the trench 18" deep and put the wire in conduit. Do I just need another line running from the house to the garage to increase service? I have 2 empty slots on my main breaker.

What I did was to add a piece of 2/2/4/6 aluminum "direct bury mobile home service entrance cable" in conduit from the panel in the house to the one in the shop. That is rated for 100 amps and worked well for me.

Today's progress was replacing the 3 single bulb light fixtures with 3 LED shop lights. Wow, what a difference! The 3 bulbs output 800 lumens each for 2400 total. Each shop light is 2400, so there is a lot more light! I also added the sill extensions on the window and door so they are now flush with the sheetrock and I have something to mount the trim to. Finally, I put the first coat of mud on the sheetrock. Mudding is a chore, and I have respect for the professionals who do it so quickly and so perfectly! I am neither quick or perfect!

Just don't go the route of "I'll finish and paint later" on the walls, or you never will, for all the treasures you accumulate. BTDT.

I did think of that, but I am going the whole route - paint, window and door trim etc. Even thinking of epoxy painting the floor. Second coat of mud goes on this weekend, and then I'll paint the walls the following weekend. Thinking of a light gray paint with darker gray trim. I just replaced my home theater sound system in the house, and the old Sony 5.1 system will be going in the shop!
